Wayne County man dies after head-on collision on U.S. Route 30 involving wrong-way driver

TUSCARAWAS TWP. – One driver was killed and another seriously injured in a head-on crash Saturday night along westbound U.S. Route 30 outside of Massillon.

Douglas B. Fahrni, 62, of Apple Creek, was killed in the crash, which occurred around 10:45 p.m., according to investigators with the Highway Patrol.

According to a news release from the Patrol:

Fahrni was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Malibu westbound Route 30. His car collided head-on with a 2019 Chevrolet Trax going on the wrong side of the divided highway, eastbound in the westbound lanes.

The other driver, Franco P. Guidone, 30, of Louisville, was serious injured and taken to Aultman Hospital by Brewster Fire Department. He has a broken right leg, according to the release.

An off-duty police officer from the Perry Township Police Department and an off-duty paramedic from the Perry Township Fire Department drove up on the crash and helped the drivers and rendered aid, according to the release.

The Massillon Police Department, the Brewster Fire Department, the North Lawrence Fire Department, and the Ohio Department of Transportation all assisted the Highway Patrol at the scene.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the traffic crash, according to the patrol.

The crash remains under investigation. No charges had been filed.
