Warren Evans won his bid for another term as Wayne County executive, based on unofficial election results from the Wayne County Clerk's Office Wednesday morning.

Evans, who is nearing the end of his second term as county executive, led his opponent, Republican Mark Ashley Price, by 444,217 to 174,149 votes, with all 1,067 precincts reporting as of 10:30 a.m.

Evans, a former Wayne County sheriff, lives in Canton with his wife, Renata, according to his county website biography.

The bio noted that his “no-drama approach to governing in the state's largest county serves as a strong model for ethical leadership and fiscal responsibility.”

Evans helped steer the county through a financial crisis during his first term, avoiding a county bankruptcy and exiting a consent agreement with the state in 14 months. The efforts included elimination of an $82 million accumulated deficit and $52 million structural deficit, the bio said.

More recently, Evans’ office has had to field questions about the county’s handling of dire conditions at the county’s juvenile jail facilities, which have been the subject of a Free Press investigation. The deteriorating conditions and safety concerns prompted county officials last month to abandon the downtown facility in favor of a vacant adult jail, the paper reported.

Evans highlighted aging infrastructure in response for a questionnaire in the Free Press voter guide, noting that the county has one of the oldest road and bridge systems in the country:

“As the CEO it is my responsibility to provide the adequate infrastructure that's funded by the federal or state government and while we do the best we can, the current funding levels are inadequate."
