Wayne OKs deal for recycling: What it costs and how it affects pickup schedule

WAYNE — The township will initially save more than 6% per month on the cost of recyclables collection under a new contract that takes effect in July, officials said.

The agreement with Get-A-Can Inc., an affiliate of Paterson-based Gaeta Recycling Co., will mean changes to the schedule of curbside pickups, but officials said they do not expect a difference in the level of service.

Commingled glass, metal and plastic, as well as cardboard and paper, are now collected on the same day every other week.

When the new schedule is in place, commingled items and paper items will be picked up on alternate weeks. The township will also reduce the number of collection zones from 16 to 10.

“We believe this change will continue to decrease the cost to the township,” said Business Administrator Christopher Tietjen. Residents will be notified of their new collection zones, he said.

The township will pay Gaeta $145,000 per month in the first term of the contract, which runs through November. There are two subsequent terms that will carry the pact through the end of 2025.

The total value of the contract is $4.7 million, but the township is not obligated to spend the full amount because the service is being provided on a month-to-month basis.

Gaeta is now paid $154,500 per month as part of a six-month emergency pact that officials approved in December.

At the time, Gaeta and the township were engaged in a contract dispute. The prior agreement was ending, and the hauler offered a new rate that was 151.4% above what officials had paid for the service.

Officials rejected Gaeta’s bids three times, and as their contract lapsed, residents had to temporarily dispose of their recyclables at the public works yard on Dey Road. The company was eventually rehired under the emergency pact when the township’s deal with another hauler fell through.
