Wayne seeks $1M grant to help play for work on Heartland Trail in Chippewa Township

The Wayne County commissioner approved applying for grants for various count projects.

WOOSTER - Wayne County is submitting an application for a state grant to help with the Heartland Trail project in Chippewa Township.

The grant, in partnership with the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study, would be for about $1 million. Wayne County Rails to Trails would over the remaining $381,000 of the estimated $1.38 million project.

The area to be worked on would be between Coal Bank and Black Diamond roads. A completion date is projected for August 2027, according to information from the Nov. 15 Wayne County Commissioners meeting.

In another Chippewa Township matter, commissioners approved a request to allow the Wayne County Engineer's Office to apply for a resurfacing grant through the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study.

The funds would be used to repave and Mill Doylestown Road from Jordan Road to Rittman's city limits. The project cost estimate is about $1.16 million, and up to $900,000 would be covered by the grant.

Also at the meeting, commissioners approved a resolution to renew a contract for dispatch services for the Central Fire District, Chippewa Township and East Union Township through the Justice Center communications. The agreements will run Jan. 1, 2024-Dec. 31, 2028.

In other business, the commissioners:

  • Approved a resolution that allows for the trade-in of six vehicles the Wayne County Sheriff's Office no longer needs. The county would purchase six 2023 Dodge Durango SUVs.

  • Approved a resolution awarding a contract to McConnell Contracting of West Lafayette for the Criswell Road bridge project over the south branch of Salt Creek, with the project cost not to exceed $552,176.

  • Approved a resolution allowing for the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency to transfer three portable radios to the West Salem Police Department to replace old radios that will become unusable after July 1, 2025.

  • Approved a resolution to enter into an agreement between Ohio State University and the Wayne County Sheriff for mutual aid.
