Waynesboro PD: Man attacks restaurant patrons, cop injured

WAYNESBORO — Police arrested a man Saturday who is accused of attacking multiple people inside a restaurant, injuring a police officer and being involved in two crashes.

The Waynesboro Police Department said on Saturday at the Applebee's Grill and Bar, located in the 900 block of Lew Dewitt Boulevard, a man assaulted multiple people inside the eatery. Before police arrived, the suspect, 32-year-old Terrell D. Williams, fled the scene, a press release said.

A short time later, a Waynesboro police officer located Williams in the 2800 block of West Main Street after the suspect reportedly crashed his vehicle into another car. Police said the officer was injured during a struggle with Williams, who again fled in his vehicle at a high rate of speed, according to the release. Responding officers attempted to stop his vehicle but were unsuccessful.

As additional officers responded to the location of the injured officer, they were alerted by citizens concerning a vehicle involved in a crash at the BP gas station at 1441 W. Main St.

There, police removed Williams from the vehicle and placed him under arrest. He was found to have a large quantity of a suspected controlled substance along with an undisclosed amount of cash, the release said.

The injured Waynesboro officer was treated at Augusta Health in Fishersville and released. Williams also was taken to the hospital before being transferred to Middle River Regional Jail on charges of malicious wounding, attempted malicious wounding, possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence (4th offense within 10 years), felony hit-and-run, and two misdemeanor charges of obstruction of justice.

He is being held without bond.
