With just weeks to go before the November election, a sleeper U.S. Senate race in a deeply Republican state is starting to garner some attention. A poll released on Sept. 28 showed Alaska Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan with a razor-thin 1 point lead over his main challenger, Al Gross, an orthopedic surgeon. While Gross is technically an independent, Democrats are backing him as part of the party's efforts to gain a majority in the closely divided Senate.
Donald Trump has fired off a barrage of typically outrageous tweets to start the week. Just after 8.30am EST on Monday, Mr Trump issued a trio of tweets disparaging states run by the Democratic Party. In the first, Mr Trump tweeted that "California is going to hell".
A 19-year-old Colorado woman who was left permanently brain damaged after breast augmentation surgery has died, her family said. Emmalyn Nguyen, of Thornton, went for breast implant surgery on Aug. 1, 2019. According to the lawsuit filed by her family against Dr. Geoffrey Kim, Nguyen, who was 18 at the time, wasn't monitored for the first 15 minutes after being administered anesthesia.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to shed tears at the weekend as he thanked citizens for their sacrifices, in the most striking demonstration yet of how he is relying on his "man of the people" persona to tackle his country's deepening crises. Speaking at a military parade on Saturday, Kim became emotional as he paid tribute to troops for their response to national disasters and preventing a coronavirus outbreak and apologised to citizens for failing to raise living standards. "Kim's modesty and candour, and his tears and choking, were all highly unusual, even for someone who publicly acknowledges shortcomings and has an established pattern of being expressive," said Rachel Minyoung Lee, an independent researcher and former open-source North Korea analyst for the U.S. government.
Four Republican state governors have declined to sign a letter in support of President Trump's nominee to the Supreme Court, Judge Amy Coney Barrett. Out of the nation's 28 Republican governors, 24 signed a joint letter urging the “swift confirmation” of Barrett. The governors who did not sign were Larry Hogan of Maryland, Charlie Baker of Massachusetts, Phil Scott of Vermont, and Chris Sununu of New Hampshire.
Regeneron chief executive Leonard Schleifer on Sunday said President Donald Trump's treatment with the company's experimental antibody cocktail is "a case of one," but stressed ongoing clinical trials still need to show its efficacy. "The president's case is a case of one, and that's what we call a case report, and it is evidence of what's happening, but it's kind of the weakest evidence that you can get," Schleifer said in an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation." Schleifer added that there were "some very interesting aspects" in Trump's case, such as his age.

New York governor Andrew Cuomo has insisted that he has “no interest in going to Washington” after reports suggested he would be a candidate for US attorney general if Joe Biden is elected president in November's election. On Sunday, several Democratic donors told Axios that Mr Cuomo is being pushed for the position in a possible Biden administration, with the presidential election just a few weeks away. The donors said that Mr Biden would consider him for the role, due to their long-running friendship and because Mr Cuomo formerly served as attorney general of New York before becoming the state's governor in 2011.

As Graham sees it, the flood of cash is a national response to the fact that he helped confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018 and is considered a political ally of President Trump.
Far-right groups are planning online to monitor polling sites on Election Day, some of them armed, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. Stewart Rhodes, the leader of a far-right group called Oath Keepers, said his members would draw their weapons if needed. Rhodes said he wanted to prevent "the radical left" from intimidating voters.
The wife of Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor said she was subject to a racist verbal attack at a grocery store on Sunday. Gisele Barreto Fetterman, wife to Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, said the incident happened when she went to buy some kiwis near her home outside Pittsburgh. “I ran to the local grocery store and was met by and verbally assaulted by this woman who repeatedly told me I do not belong here,” she wrote on Twitter.
As Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump by double digits in national polls, bookmakers are predicting that six Senate seats will flip on Election Day. As of Monday, Biden has a 10-point lead on Trump nationally, according to USA Today's average of polling averages from RealClearPolitics and FiveThirtyEight. Biden is also leading Trump in 10 out of 11 swing states and increased his lead in seven states, including North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida and Michigan, according to the publication.

The White House has called on the US debates commission to allow Donald Trump to debate Joe Biden as planned, despite the president already turning down a virtual proposal. In a statement on Sunday, White House deputy communications director Brian Morgenstern called on the commission to reconsider the televised debate, CNN reported. It comes four days after the Commission on Presidential Debates cancelled a second in-person event between Mr Trump and the Democratic presidential nominee, Mr Biden, due to take place on Thursday, over concerns about the president's coronavirus diagnosis.
Southwest Airlines announced Monday that it plans to begin operating out of two major airports: Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Flights are expected to begin at both airports in the first half of 2021, the budget airline said in a news release, adding that flight schedules and fares will be released “soon. Southwest owes decades of success to our Employees and Customers who have supported our business in Chicago and Houston,” said Gary Kelly, the airline's CEO and chairman.
