LISA HUGHES: Hi, everyone. Thanks for joining us. I'm Lisa Hughes, and this is a WBZ News Update. In Worcester, a police officer and a 14-year-old boy drowned in a pond. Police say they got several 9-1-1 calls that there were kids in trouble in the water.

Five officers arrived and immediately went into the water at Green Hill Park to try to save the kids. Two children were immediately rescued by one of the officers. But officer Manny Familia and the 14-year-old did not resurface. Both were found later by the dive team and died at the hospital. The boy's name has not been released. Familia was a husband and a father of two children and a five-year veteran of the Worcester police force.

Two police officers were shot in Braintree, responding to a domestic violence call. When they arrived at McCusker Drive, they were told that the suspect, who was armed, had run into the woods. Police began searching for that man when officers say he opened fire.

Two officers were hit and wounded, and a police dog was killed. The officers returned fire, killing the suspect, a Brockton man in his 30s. The officers were rushed into surgery.

And at that scene, police lined up to salute the canine, who was killed, Kit. As the body of the dog was carried out of the woods draped in an American flag. Kit was a 12-year veteran of the police force.

Hingham police tonight are investigating an attempted kidnapping of a 10-year-old boy. This happened near the Hingham Community Center. Officers say a man in a black or a dark gray Lexus sedan tried to grab that boy, but the child got away and ran to safety. He described the man as white with brown hair and wearing a black hoodie.

Well, it's heating up around here, and it's a little active outside. Let's get a check of the forecast now with Eric.

ERIC FISHER: Our first heat wave of the season is on the way in. Tonight, we'll clear out. Overnight lows down near 60. Enjoy the early morning hours because it'll get toasty out there on Saturday, approaching 90 degrees.

We'll have a west-southwest wind, which means that warmer air will make it right to the coastline. So if you're heading to the beaches, expect it to be a warm one, touching 90 in some towns. On Sunday, low 90s look likely. Hazy, hot, and humid weather.

The one area that'll be cooler for tomorrow be the South Coast and the Cape. And if you're down here on Cape Cod the islands, a lot of low clouds and fog look likely through at least the first half of the day. So it will not be a completely sunny day for you there-- a slow start.

Everyone else will jump into the sun and the hot air. And then for the Cape and the islands, it'll be less of an issue on Sunday. Warmer day, reaching the 80s, well into the 90s everywhere else. So it's going to be a hot stretch. And it looks like about a five-day heat wave as this will extend into Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week before breaking. Lisa.

LISA HUGHES: All right, Eric, thank you. And thanks for being with us. This has been a WBZ News Update.
