House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday defended her previous suggestion that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden should not debate President Trump, claiming the president has “no fidelity to fact or truth.” Ahead of the first presidential debate next week, Pelosi doubled down during an appearance on “Morning on CBS” on comments she made last month that the former vice president should skip the debates so they don't become “an exercise in skullduggery.” When asked if she still believed Biden should sit out the three presidential debates on September 29, October 15, and October 22, she said “Oh, I do.”
Wendy Rittenhouse, the mother of accused Kenosha, Wisconsin, shooter Kyle Rittenhouse, reportedly received a standing ovation at a GOP event in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, on Thursday. Rittenhouse was invited by conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, who was speaking at the event about "safety and self-defense" organized by the Republican Women of Waukesha County. Police say Kyle Rittenhouse traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin, from his home in Illinois where he shot three people, killing two of them, at demonstrations following the caught-on-camera police shooting of Jacob Blake.
The claim: Daniel Cameron's wife is related to Mitch McConnell Following outrage over the grand jury charges in the deadly police shooting of Breonna Taylor that sparked a new wave of nationwide demonstrations for racial equality, online posts have surfaced that claim a family connection between two prominent Kentucky politicians. Social media users say Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron's new wife and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. are related.
Bailey Boswell, the woman accused of helping her boyfriend strangle a 24-year-old wooed through Tinder, “got off sexually” from talking about killing and torture, prosecutors alleged on Friday, as the bombshell trial involving claims of a vampire sex cult began. Boswell, 26, is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and improper disposal of human remains for her role in the 2017 slaying and dismemberment of Sydney Loofe, a cashier at a Lincoln home-improvements store. Prosecutors allege Boswell conspired for weeks with her boyfriend, Aubrey Trail, 52, to lure Loofe to her death.
A man recently charged with multiple counts of murder related to the 2016 deaths of two people in Travis County, Texas, was arrested on Monday by the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and the Austin Police Department. On September 18, a grand jury indicted 53-year-old Harvey Lester Cyphers in the murders of Sidney Taylor and Krislyn Gibson. The pair had traveled from their homes in Houston to Austin on April 1, 2016, to attend the 2016 Urban Music Festival.
If calling a “lid" enters the mainstream American lexicon, this will be the week it all started. Joe Biden called a lid — the arcane term reporters use when a politician is done traveling for the day — at 1:02 p.m. Friday; 9:20 a.m. Thursday; 9:22 a.m. Tuesday and 8:34 a.m. Saturday. Biden's early turn-ins provoked the Twitter set, professionally nervous Democrats (OK, bedwetters) and, notably, Donald Trump to scratch their heads or rain down ridicule.
A pregnant woman saved her husband from a shark attack by jumping into the water and pulling him to safety. The couple were on a private boat at Sombrero Reef in the Florida Keys when her husband got into the water and bitten by a bull shark, the Miami Herald reports. Margot Dukes-Eddy sprang into action after seeing the shark's dorsal fin and blood spilling into the water next to where her husband had gotten in.
WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was called out Friday by CBS News' Gayle King after referring to President Donald Trump and his allies as "henchmen," language that King said some found "egregious." The exchange came after King asked whether Pelosi still felt that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden shouldn't debate Trump. The first presidential debate between Biden and Trump is slated for Tuesday.
Less than three weeks before early voting begins in Texas, a U.S. district judge has blocked the state from eliminating straight-ticket voting as an option for people who vote in person this November. In a ruling issued late Friday, U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo cited the coronavirus pandemic, saying the elimination of the voting practice would "cause irreparable injury" to voters "by creating mass lines at the polls and increasing the amount of time voters are exposed to COVID-19." The court also found that the GOP-backed law "imposes a discriminatory burden on African-American and Hispanic voters" and is "likely to cause confusion among voters."
More than 1,000 New Yorkers have tested positive for Covid-19 in a single day on Friday. On Saturday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced there were 1,005 positive cases out of nearly 100,000 tests on the previous day. Mr Cuomo called for continued practice of virus-mitigation guidelines.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential nominee, has gone on record multiple times in the past to nix the idea of adding more seats to the Supreme Court. But, recently, in light of President Trump's plan to nominate a replacement for the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg — reportedly Amy Coney Barrett, who is well-respected by conservatives and would theoretically shift the high court to a 6-3 conservative majority — before the November election, Biden exhibited a slight change of tone. When asked about court expansion earlier this week, Biden responded that it was a "legitimate question."
Malaysia's 7-month-old ruling alliance triumphed Saturday in its first electoral test in eastern Sabah state, a major victory for embattled Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin amid challenges to his leadership. Sabah was ruled by the opposition and the state poll was seen as a referendum for Muhyiddin's unelected government. Analysts said the victory could push Muhyiddin to call for early national elections to bolster his coalition that has a thin two-seat majority in Parliament.
A woman in an English supermarket ransacked shelves holding dozens of wine bottles after being told to follow the store's one-way system, put in place to help customers social distance. The Co-op supermarket chain released the CCTV footage amid growing concerns about the verbal and physical abuse of shop workers who attempt to enforce social distancing measures. A new law to increase the penalties for assaulting shop workers was due to be discussed in the UK Parliament on Friday.
SOUTH BEND, Indiana – When Amy Coney Barrett's colleagues at the University of Notre Dame Law School learned of her nomination for a federal appeals court seat in 2017, they began signing a letter of support for her confirmation. The letter began circulating on a Thursday, recalled professor Stephen Yelderman, who was traveling and could not immediately sign it. When Yelderman returned to the office after the weekend, his colleagues were quick to approach him.
Former President Barack Obama endorsed the Rev. Raphael Warnock in Georgia's special U.S. Senate election on Friday, providing a boost as the candidate looks to consolidate support in order to win a spot in a potential runoff. The nod was among dozens of endorsements of Democratic candidates across the country released by Obama on Twitter. Warnock, who is pastor of the Atlanta church where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. preached, is one of 20 candidates challenging Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler for the seat she was appointed to by Georgia's governor 9 months ago.
Popstar Rihanna has criticised Daniel Cameron, Kentucky's attorney general, over his decision not to charge any officers with the killing of Breonna Taylor, a black woman who was gunned down during a bungled raid on her home in March. "I'm just gon' [sic] let this sink into your hollow skull," the Barbados-born singer wrote in an Instagram post in which Mr Cameron was tagged, next to a picture of a sign that read: "A cop shot a black woman and was only charged for the shots missed!" Rihanna, 32, published the post on Friday, two days after Mr Cameron, 34, announced that none of the three officers involved in Taylor's death would be charged with killing her.
The pharmaceutical giant reported that 99 percent of the participants between the ages of 18 and 55 in early-to-mid stage clinical trials developed neutralizing antibodies against the novel virus. It wasn't clear, however, whether participants over 65 were well-protected since immune response results were available for only 15 people in that demographic. One of the key aspects of Johnson & Johnson's trial is that just a single dose produced a strong immune response in participants.
Donald Trump and Joe Biden | Texas Photo illustration by Salon/Getty Images More polls on the 2020 presidential race have come in for Texas — and once again, former Vice President Joe Biden is within striking distance of President Donald Trump, who is ahead by only 3% in a New York Times/Siena poll and by 5% in a Quinnipiac poll. Texas is still in play for Biden, but even if Trump ultimately wins the Lone Star State, these polls are an ominous sign for the GOP and underscore the inroads Democrats are making in a state that Republicans can no longer take for granted. Texas' U.S. Senate race is another ominous sign for the GOP.
New Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said he and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed in talks Friday to work closely together by holding high-level meetings including summits, but did not discuss the possibility of a visit by Xi to Japan. I told (Xi) that the stability of Japan-China relations is crucial, not only for the two countries but also for the region and for international society,” Suga told reporters after their phone conversation. His talks with Xi Friday were his first since taking office just over a week ago, replacing Shinzo Abe, who resigned due to poor health.
