Coming off a 54-16 cumulative record the past three seasons, one can’t blame the Wesleyan Christian fans for being eager for the opening tip.

Even though the Mustangs will be Kade-less — four-year starter and top-tier scorer Kade Kelley has graduated — WCS still returns an experienced and formidable lineup for second-year head coach Steven Cooks.

His prospective main rotation includes Matt Marquez at point guard, versatile guards Trey White and Kyle Kelley, a multi-skilled weapon in Tyrel Cloud, a multi-faceted forward in Cooper Holley, a guard/forward component in Kael Siemers and an impactful load in Jarrett Jensen, who is listed at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds.

Cooks looks forward to watching Kyle Kelley develop, based on what he did during summer basketball.

“Kyle has put in a ton of work,” he said. “I looking forward to see how he can get things going for us.”

Last year, Cooks guided WCS to its best-ever record, 20-4, coming off a back-to-back 17-win campaigns the previous two years.

“This year, we’ll have the experience of the the guys coming back and a strong core of juniors,” Cooks noted. “We’ll have much more depth than last year. … Hopefully we’ll play a little faster. … It will be more of a group effort, which I think can work to our favor.”

The Mustangs eye their season opener Friday at South Coffeyville.
