Weakley signs with Michigan Tech

Apr. 7—When looking for a college to attend, Trevor Weakley was focused on the academic side of things first and foremost.

It just so happens that one of the schools that he was interested in, also will give him a chance to continue his football career as well.

Weakley will attend Michigan Tech to continue his academic and athletic careers. He had a signing ceremony at the school on Friday afternoon.

"I am really excited to get it all finalized," Weakley said. "They have a really good engineering program, especially civil engineering, and that was my first priority. I got the opportunity to play football too, so I am excited about that."

Michigan Tech is an NCAA Division II school that plays in the Great Lakes Inercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Huskies went 4-7 last year and will have a new coach in Dan Mettlach.

Weakley said a lot of things about the campus stood out to him.

"It's a medium sized campus, so it's not as big as some schools but it is bigger than some of the other schools around here," Weakley said. "I liked that size of school, plus it is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is nice."

Weakley was an all-conference, all-region and all-state player at Western Boone.

This past year, he rushed for 1,479 yards for the Stars, scoring 14 touchdowns. He finished his career with 2,347 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Weakley has played on both sides of the ball for WeBo, but will focus on the offensive side of the ball for now at Michigan Tech.

"They liked how smart of a player I am," Weakley said. "They don't know exactly what spot I will be in now, but they think they can figure it out when i get there."

Since the football season ended, Weakley has stayed busy and working on improving himself.

He was a conference and sectional champ in wrestling, and advanced to the semi-state this year.

Weakley also has stayed busy in the weight room.

"I have continued to lift and work in the weight room," Weakley said. "Coach Birk wrote me a workout plan that I have been doing that emphasizes some of the things I struggle with so that when I go to college, I'll be ready to go."

When it comes to his time at Western Boone, there are a lot of things Weakley will take with him when he heads to Michigan Tech.

He said the lessons he learned from being at Western Boone have been invaluable.

"I will remember all the life lessons coach Pelley taught me," Weakley said. "He is a really good coach and I took everything he said to heart. I am excited to use it in the future."

Weakley plans on studying civil engineering at Michigan Tech.
