A grand jury in New York has indicted former President Donald Trump, marking the first time a former president has been charged criminally.

The specific charges remain sealed for the moment, but we do know the grand jury was investigating Trump's ties to a $130,000 payment then-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen made to adult film star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 election. The candidate's campaign did not disclose the payment in campaign expense reports.

News of the indictment spurred reaction from Ted Cruz, who ran for president against Trump in 2016, but was an ally of the Republican leader throughout this presidency.

"This is completely unprecedented and is a catastrophic escalation in the weaponization of the justice system," Cruz tweeted.

Greg Abbott took a similar approach, tweeting that "Weaponization of our courts is an abhorrent abuse of power."

The "weaponization" phrase was used by the former president during a rally in Waco this past weekend, too.

"The Biden regime’s weaponization of our system of justice is straight out of the Stalinist Russia horror show,” Trump said from the podium.

Several other Texas leaders used similar language to describe the indictment.
