Weather alert: Storms and floods back in the Miami forecast. What to know about the week

Storms are returning to South Florida.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say we should be prepared for “numerous” thunderstorms on Monday afternoon, and the rain will likely stick around into the evening.

On Monday afternoon, a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Broward and Palm Beach counties until 8 p.m. It was later extended until 10 p.m.

Here’s what to know about Monday and the rest of the week:

Monday forecast

Rain outlook: Rain chance rises to 60% Monday afternoon after rain rolled through the region in the morning, according to the National Weather Service in Miami. The weather service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Glades, Hendry, Broward, and Palm Beach counties until 8 p.m. Monday. Severe wind gusts and hail are possible.

Take note: Thunderstorms could arrive around 4 p.m. as afternoon rush hour traffic intensifies and as Miami Heat fans head to the downtown Miami arena for the 7:30 p.m. playoff game against he Milwaukee Bucks.

Hazards: Storms may be accompanied by lightning, strong wind gusts, small or severe hail, and a brief tornado, the weather service warns.

Flooding: Aventura reported flooded streets before noon Monday at Northeast 188th Street, about a mile south of the mall, and police warned of traffic backups in the Northeast Miami-Dade city.

Temperatures: Monday afternoon’s high will rise to the low-80s and dip to about 70 overnight.

What the forecaster says: “Worst weather likely though noon through 9 p.m. with the potential for heavy downpours, localized flooding,” said CBS News Miami meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez.
