Weather: Area could see snow Sunday as springlike weather takes a break

The almost springlike weather the Shenandoah Valley has been experiencing this week will take a backseat, at least for a day, for Old Man Winter this Sunday. After a week of temperatures in the 50s and even 60s, colder temperatures will return with some snow across the Staunton and Augusta County area this weekend, according to AccuWeather.

"It's one of these roller-coaster kind of deals," Jeff Nordeen, a meteorologist with AccuWeather, said. "We're going to be in the upper 40s, 50s today, tomorrow, then we're down in the cooler temps on Sunday, upper 30s, even 20s for the overnight low. By Monday into Tuesday we're actually drying out with those 50s again."

Nordeen said he's looking for 1 to 2 inches of snow in the Staunton area Sunday with higher accumulations in the mountains.

"Possibly up to four inches as you go a little bit more west into the higher elevations in between Monterey and Churchville," he said.

Nordeen said that if the cooler air moves farther east it could mean a little more snow.

"The healthy range I'm going to stick with is 1 to 2," he said. "Could see as much as 3 in Staunton."

Nordeen said the bulk of the snow should arrive Sunday morning, probably around 10 a.m.

"The majority of the afternoon until we get to 10 o'clock at night we're still going to be experiencing a bit of snow," he said.

AccuWeather says temperatures will return into the 50s for next week through Friday with the possibility of some rain Thursday.

Looking ahead to the rest of February, Nordeen said AccuWeather is pretty confident that this area will see lower precipitation, both rain and snow. While precipitation will be below normal, he said temperatures will be above normal the rest of the month for all of Virginia.

"Now, as we go into March I have seen some trends that say we could see some snow throughout the month, and some of it could be accumulating," Nordeen said. "We're trending that way right now but we don't have the pinpointed date of arrival for that."
