Weather Cancellation Continues Jan. 5 At Fairfax County Schools

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Students will not return for winter break for the third straight day as Fairfax County Public Schools canceled school Wednesday, Jan. 5.

There will be no virtual learning, but school offices will open two hours late and central offices at 10 a.m. School Age Child Care centers will be closed. Cancellations will include extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional learning and training courses, Adult High School and GED, and recreation programs and community use by outside groups. This is the third day of cancellations, as students were originally scheduled to return from winter break on Jan. 3.

FCPS plans to offer weekly meal kit distribution at scheduled locations Thursday, Jan. 6 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. instead of Wednesday. Meal kits include five days worth of breakfast and lunch and seven days of afternoon snack and dinner meals.

Weather impacts continue from Monday's winter storm, including hazardous roads and scattered power outages. Some areas of Fairfax County received over 10 inches of snow, according to preliminary totals from the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service says there is potential for hazardous conditions Wednesday morning with a 30 to 50 percent chance of light freezing rain. If freezing rain does occur, forecasters expect dangerous travel conditions, crashes and delays.

South of Fairfax County, closures on Interstate 95 continue from Monday. Some travelers have been stranded on I-95 for 24 hours, but some drivers started to be escorted off Tuesday afternoon.
