SHEBOYGAN — Blue Harbor Resort & Conference Center announced via Facebook Monday The Weather Channel will be in Sheboygan to report on Lake Michigan during the winter weather sweeping through this week.

With a coating of snow already on the ground, Sheboygan is to set to receive its first winter storm of the season beginning Tuesday. High winds from the storm may bring in ideal waves for surfers, and with them, people curious about the freshwater winter surfing popular in the "Malibu of the Midwest."

This may be why The Weather Channel is reported to be coming to town.

The reporters will head to the lake from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday in the hopes of seeing surfers and perhaps conduct a few interviews, Blue Harbor Resort & Conference Center posted to the Lake Life Sheboygan Facebook group.

“We just got word that The Weather Channel will be in town to capture the lake for the storm,” the post read.

Lisa Adams, marketing manager at Blue Harbor Resort, said the reporters are also planning to film Tuesday evening and possibly Wednesday morning.

Winter weather surfing in Sheboygan

The freshwater surfing capital of the world, Sheboygan has been coined the “Malibu of the Midwest” by surfers and water lovers.

While surfing is a year-round sport, the cool, dense air in the winter season makes the waves higher and more powerful.

While waves in the north are generally built from south wind and waves in the south are built from wind coming from the north, Sheboygan’s central positioning on the lake allows for wind coming from both directions to cause the popular waves.
