Update: Weather delays Georgia vs. UMBC softball in NCAA Durham Regional for several hours

Update: UMBC vs. Georgia softball got underway at 8 p.m. ET after a four-hour, 25-minute weather delay. When the game finally took place, Georgia beat UMBC 6-3 in a game that took 2 hours, 44 minutes. 

Rain and lightning caused games to be delayed for several hours at the NCAA Tournament Durham Regional on Saturday, May 21.

Duke defeated Liberty 5-0 in the first game of the day, but after that, the skies opened up.

UMBC vs. Georgia was scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. ET, but that game won't start until well after 6 p.m. ET.

Georgia softball first tweeted about the rain delay at 3:43 p.m. ET. At 5:41 p.m. ET, UGA softball tweeted, "The rain has started to fall here in Durham and the tarp is on the field and it continues to storm Stay tuned for more updates!"

UMBC softball's first tweet about the rain delay came at 3:48 p.m. ET, and it said, "SCHEDULE ALERT: Due to lightning in the area, the start of our game has been delayed. There is currently no scheduled start time. We will keep you updated."

A more recent UMBC tweet came at 5:48 p.m. ET, and it said, "SCHEDULE UPDATE: Heavy rainstorms are now in the area, we will keep you updated to when we will start."

At 6:27 p.m. ET, UMBC tweeted that the teams are "targeting" to have the first pitch at 8 p.m. ET.

Liberty is awaiting the winner of UMBC vs. Georgia. That game is also scheduled to take place Saturday night after UMBC vs. Georgia concludes.

Liberty softball tweeted that its game will only take place Saturday if it can "begin before 10:59 p.m."
