Weather Flash: Why do we have leap years?

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Leap years happen every few years, but why is it so important to have them? And what would happen if we ended up not seeing a leap year?

Adding an extra day every few years will help keep the calendar in “balance” when it comes to seasons.

If we do not add the extra day, we could see the winter season start in June — instead of it starting in December.
