Weather forces Newton, Pella Christian girls into tie on pitch

Apr. 5—PELLA — The Little Hawkeye Conference soccer match between the Newton girls and Pella Christian was moved up in an effort to get in front of forecasted severe weather.

It turns out, there still wasn't enough time.

The Cardinals and Eagles played to a 1-all draw through regulation on Tuesday, but lightning during warmups before overtime forced a suspension of play and both coaching staffs agreed that the match would end with that same score.

"It was a windy match. Overall, we played quite a bit on the defensive side throughout the game," Newton girls co-head soccer coach Victoria Jordan said. "We did manage to hold the ball on the offensive side in some parts of the game."

The Cardinals (1-1-1 overall, 0-0-1 in the LHC) and Eagles both finished with 10 shots in the tie.

Pella Christian (2-0-1, 0-0-1) took advantage of the wind in the first half and Joslyn Terpstra put the Eagles up 1-0.

Newton tied the match in the second half after Briana Shannon sent the ball into the back of the net. Tori White delivered the assist.

Cardinal goalkeeper Natalee Freese finished with 11 saves in the match.
