Halloween 2023 will be a chilly one for millions across the country Tuesday as some of the coldest air of the season rolls into the central and eastern U.S. Only the Southeast and Southwest will be spared the worst of the Halloween chill, forecasters said.

In fact, practically the entire northern tier of the U.S. will see cool weather on Halloween, all the way from the Pacific Northwest to New England.

In the heavy populated Northeast and mid-Atlantic, the blast of wintry weather will feature accumulating snow and hard freezes for some. It will be the chilliest air since last spring, according to AccuWeather.

"Those with heavier costumes with many layers will have a heads up on staying warm compared to their compatriots who don't," said Bill Deger, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. "Temperatures will be in the 30s Tuesday evening across most of the interior and 40s in the big cities along I-95 and near the coast," he added, with a pesky breeze compounding the chill.

Though the bulk of the eastern U.S. will be dry on Halloween, a few showers are possible in portions of the mid-Atlantic and southern New England.

Frigid temperatures will hit the central US

Most of the central U.S. will also endure a frigid holiday.

"The spookiest day on the calendar may have a few tricks this time as record-breaking cold spreads its eerie touch from the southern Plains to the central/southern Appalachians," Weather Prediction Center forecaster Cody Snell said.

"As the night descends, temperatures will be chillingly cold while dipping into the teens and 20s for most locations, giving even the bravest late-night trick-or-treaters a shiver," he added.

Some of the coldest temperatures will come throughout the central and northern Rockies and northern Plains as lows dip into the single digits in some areas, the National Weather Service said.

Snow squalls and lake-effect snow are possible in the Upper Midwest and the Great Lakes, the weather service said. "These squalls may contain high snowfall rates and rapidly reduce visibility," Snell said. "Lake-effect snow showers may also lead to a wintry night of trick-or-treating," he said.

The Southwest and Southeast will enjoy mild weather

Some of nation's best weather on Halloween will be across the Southwest and Southeast. In Phoenix, for example, evening temperatures should be in the 70s under clear skies.

And in Southern California, the hot, dry Santa Ana winds, which plagued the region on Monday, were expected to diminish somewhat by Tuesday, the weather service said, but fire weather concerns remained.

Florida will be typically warm and humid on Halloween, and only some light evening showers are possible along southeastern portions of the state.
