Weather in July: Slightly warmer, and much wetter than average

It should come as no surprise that this July was extra rainy. Here's the data to show exactly how much more rain Vermont had and other anomalies in last month's weather.

Rainfall

The amount of rain in Chittenden County in July 2023 was certainly above normal this July. The average rainfall in July over the last 50 years has been 3.5 inches. However, in 2023, several days of heavy rain brought the total rainfall to 5.5 inches. The wettest day in July 2023 was July 12, when 1.5 inches of rain fell.

It rained for a total of 15 days this July, compared to an average of 12 from the past 50 years.

So much rain in such a short period caused rivers and lakes to rise to levels the state hadn't seen since Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.

Although there was minimal damage in Chittenden Country, other parts of the state are still recovering from July's flooding.

Temperature

The average July temperature in Chittenden County over the last 50 years has been 76 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service. In 2023, the average temperature was 78 degrees.

The highest temperature recorded in July 2023 was 91 degrees on July 15. The lowest temperature recorded was 55 degrees on July 2.

The smoke from wildfires in Canada also sporadically blew into Vermont, reducing air quality and visibility.
