Weather Permitting: Here's your Fayetteville forecast for the week

In the Cape Fear region, any day you can walk out of your house in June without getting roasted or parboiled is a day to enjoy.

Usually by now, we're consistently in the 90s in either temperature or humidity. In 2023 thus far, Fayetteville can count the number of 90-degree days on one hand — and Raleigh hasn't hit the 90-degree mark yet. From the look of things, we'll have a couple of chances to hit 90 by this weekend. As a whole, however, look for generally pleasant (for June) conditions.

The Cape Fear region will flirt with 90 degrees by mid-week.

Here's the setup

High pressure to the north continues to keep sweltering summer conditions well to our south and west. That trend will continue through the week, and likely beyond.

There's a chance that a meandering low-pressure system could spark walk-down storms from the Piedmont into the northern and western parts of the Cape Fear region by this evening, but adds are they'll die down at sunset. Highs today will top at about 82 in Fayetteville, with morning lows Tuesday of 62 or so.

Tuesday will be a bit warmer, but still dry, aside from isolated showers. Fayetteville will be close to seasonal highs at 88, dropping to 65 overnight.

Wednesday will be just as warm, perhaps a tick warmer, and muggier. A weak cold front is expected to push into central North Carolina, probably in the evening, bringing scattered showers to the region. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 90 or two pop up before then.

Thursday will see cooler air move into the region. Thursday's highs should be about 10 degrees cooler than Wednesday, and dew points will crash into the 40s. It looks like a gorgeous day, with a couple of afternoon showers in the region.

The weekend

For the first time in a while, the weekend looks sunny all the way through. Friday will see temperatures rebound into the mid-80s, with a morning low of about 60. Saturday will see the system to our north move out, creating more typical summer warmth and humidity. We might hit 90 on Saturday in Fayetteville, and it's pretty certain we'll do so on Sunday.

Down the road

Right now, it appears that the truly hot weather will stay out of the Carolinas well into June. As long as there's some sort of troughing along the East Coast, cooler air will work its way down. It's an indication that El Nino conditions are truly setting up for the summer.

In the tropics

The same setup that has brought us cooler air made short work of Tropical Storm Arlene. The first named storm of the year is now nothing more than remnant moisture, pushing off the Florida coast.

Elsewhere, there are the usual hints of potential development down the road, but nothing in the next week or so.

Have a great week!
