A winter storm warning and a winter storm watch are in effect throughout eastern Newfoundland as some areas prepare for more than 25 centimetres of snow.

The southern Avalon was placed under a warning on Thursday morning, with snow anticipated to begin by early Friday morning, becoming heavy by the afternoon. The snow will be complicated by a northerly wind gusting between 60 and 80 kilometres per hour.

Snowfall amounts on both sides of the southern Avalon could exceed 25 cm.

In the rest of the eastern region — from St. John's to the Bonavista Peninsula, and the Burin Peninsula — amounts could range between 15 and 25 cm.

"I do anticipate the rest of eastern Newfoundland will be in a winter storm warning by the time we get into this afternoon," said CBC meteorologist Ashley Brauweiler.

Conditions will deteriorate rapidly on Friday afternoon before really picking up in the evening, she said, with as much as four to five centimetres falling per hour.

The system will head off on Saturday, but winds will pick up and temperatures will drop on Saturday, which could lead to blowing snow and poor visibility.
