Baseball

Melbourne 9, Eau Gallie 6

Melbourne outlasts Eau Gallie 9-6 on the road in a big midseason showdown.

Considering both team's performances and records coming into the game, both sides knew this was going to be a battle.

"This was our big game we circled since last year. We just have really great games that are really competitive," Melbourne head coach Pete Donovan said. "I said it was going to be one these games where its going to come down to the last at bat."

The competitiveness of this game was on display early. DeAmez Ross set the tone of the game early for Eau Gallie when he stole two bases in the first inning.

After two scoreless innings, the Bulldogs offense got going in the third and showed just how strong their bats are. Jake Weatherspoon capped off their high scoring inning with a 3-run homer to put Melbourne ahead 7-0.

Eau Gallie had a late game rally and scored five runs over the fifth and sixth inning to set the score at 7-6 going into the seventh inning.

Melbourne held on to win the close game and keep their winning streak alive.

Donovan gave Eau Gallie head coach, Bob Collins, and his team a lot of credit for how they battled during the game.

Throughout the game each teams proved why they could make deep playoff runs this season. From pitching to base running both the Commodores and Bulldogs will be tough opponents late in the season.

Eau Gallie will face Gahanna Christian Academy tonight at home.

The Bulldogs will host Heritage tonight at 6 p.m.

"I think if we stay healthy and our pitchers continue, we can go far," Donovan said. "I never like to lower expectations on the kids. I say if there's championships out there, lets chase them."
