Wednesday's high school roundup: Wells, Gray-New Gloucester split soccer openers

Sep. 1—GRAY — Grace Badger scored a pair of goals to pace Wells to a 3-1 girls' soccer win over Gray-New Gloucester on the opening day of the season for teams in southern and central Maine on Wednesday.

Kaitlyn Rooney also scored for Wells. Izzy Morelli notched the lone Gray-New Gloucester goal off an assist from Trinity Bean to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead before Wells answered to take a 2-1 halftime advantage.

Savannah Tardiff made six saves for Wells. Isa Ross stopped four shots for the Patriots.

BOYS' SOCCER

GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 5, WELLS 2: Ben Cobb scored in each half, and Max Kenney recorded a goal and two assists as the Patriots topped the Warriors at Gray.

Aidan Hebert added a goal and an assist and Luka Rosolino also scored for the Patriots.

FIELD HOCKEY

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 3, POLAND 1: Eliza Thorne opened the scoring in the first quarter and set up a clinching goal by Olivia Towne in the fourth quarter as the Raiders topped the Knights in Fryeburg.

Towne assisted on Thorne's goal nine minutes into the game. Grace Merley's unassisted goal in the second quarter made it 2-0.

Sydney Lancombe scored an unassisted goal for Poland late in the first half.

Fryeburg goalie Rayna Wales made 10 saves. Addison Michaud stopped 12 shots for Poland.

GARDINER 5, MORSE 0: Bri Smith scored twice and added an assist to lead the Tigers to a win in Bath.

Taryn Nichols added a goal and an assist, and Savanna Brown and Macy Hickey each chipped in with a goal. McKenna Johnson had an assist and Cassidy Clark made one save for the shutout.

Lydia Brown stopped eight shots for Morse.

ST. DOMINIC 5, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER/NYA 0: Emily Andrews scored twice in the first quarter for the Saints, who blanked the Patriots in Auburn.

Lorelei Bonney, Chloe Beauchesne and Lily Bonney tallied second-half goals.
