Wednesday's high school scores: Diman baseball captures the Mayflower Large title

FALL RIVER — It's a league title for the Diman baseball team.

The Bengals scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and came from behind to beat Bristol-Plymouth in a thriller, 5-4, at Diman Regional Vocational Technical School on Wednesday.

With the win, Diman captures the Mayflower Athletic Conference Large Division.

Kole Andrade pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief to pick up the win for the Bengals (15-2; 6-1 in MAC). Starter Dylan Amaral pitched 6⅓ innings, scattering six hits, one walk and struck out nine batters.

Trailing 4-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jacob Furtado walked and Christian Connell drove him in with a run-scoring double to tie the game at 4-4. Diman managed just three hits on the afternoon.

The Bengals host Seekonk on Friday.

Durfee 8, Brockton 7

The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early lead and hung on to beat league opponent Brockton.

Ethan Cambra was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run for Durfee (11-8). He also scored two runs and had three RBI. Alexis Montilla had two hits, including the go-ahead RBI double, a run scored and two RBI.

Sebastien Reis went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Sam Montiero pitched 2.1 innings in relief, giving up no runs and fanned three batters.

The Hilltoppers host Apponequet on Thursday.

Bishop Connolly 7, Southeastern 2

The Cougars won their season finale against Southeastern.

Jayden Sousa and Nico Chaves each went 3-for-4 for Connolly in the win. Connor Travis finished with a pair of hits.

Travis went the distance for the Cougars, scattering seven hits while striking out seven.

Connolly took an early lead scoring three runs in the first and two more in the second.

Somerset Berkley 9, Joseph Case 6

The Raiders took the lead late and went on to beat league opponent Joseph Case.

Cole Taylor (walk), Dean Gobeil (three RBI) and Drew Crook (RBI) each had three hits in the win for SBR (12-7; 9-4 in SCC). Dominic Alderman and Brendan Chapman each collected multiple hits.

Matt Almeida got the win on the hill, allowing six hits, no runs, no walks while striking four. Ben Huer picked up the save.

Brady Thiboutot led the way offensively for Case (12-7; 7-6 in SCC). Jake Pontes (walk, run scored, RBI), Adam Gracie (walk, RBI) and Braden Ventura (triple, two walks, run scored) each had a hit.

The Raiders travel to Dartmouth on Thursday and the Cardinals travel to Hull on Friday.

Softball: Berube, Silva shine in playoff-like atmosphere for Somerset Berkley 

Stang 3, Bridgewater-Raynham 1

The Spartans came from behind late to beat non-league opponent Bridgewater-Raynham.

Seamus Marshall collected the victory on the hill for Stang (12-5). He pitched the complete-game win, striking out seven while allowing just a walk, an earned run and three hits in his 80-pitch outing. Marshall improved to 6-1.

Justin Gouveia hit the go-ahead RBI triple in the fifth inning and scored a run. Kaiden Peltier finished with a pair of hits and scored a run. Aidan Cardoza had a double and an RBI while Jackson Tingley Prince finished with a hit and a run scored.

The Spartans travel to Apponequet on Monday.

Wareham 7, Atlantis Charter 2

The Tritons lost to non-league opponent Wareham.

Jaryn Mitchell pitched seven innings for ACH (8-9), allowing just two earned runs. He also had a triple at the plate.

The Tritons play a rematch with the Vikings on Friday.

SOFTBALL

Durfee 14, Brockton 13

The Hilltoppers won a slugfest against league opponent Brockton

Kat Rumsey had four hits and scored four times in the win for Durfee (3-15). Sadi Fitzgerald collected four hits while Emily Curran contributed a bases-loaded, three-run RBI triple.

Courtesy runner Rachel Silva scored three runs and had four stolen bases. Defensively, Mia Jacob, Maddie Teasdale, Gillian Costa, Iyanna Nelson, Sara Misturado and Nikki Griffin each played great defense.

The Hilltoppers play in the Cardinal Spellman tournament on Saturday.

BOYS TENNIS

Durfee 5, Brockton 0

The Hilltoppers finished the regular season, sweeping all five matches against league opponent Brockton on Senior Day.

Jorge Beltran (6-1, 6-3), Chris Panchley (6-0, 6-1) and Will Rumsey (7-6 (7), 6-3) each won their singles match for Durfee (14-4, 6-2 in SEC). Jack Fitzgerald and Ryan Horseman won in straight sets at first doubles, 6-2, 6-2.

Jesse Tamba and Colin Fleet took their match at second doubles, 6-1, 6-0.

The Hilltoppers await the tournament seedings.

Bishop Connolly 3, St. John Paul II 2

The Cougars won a close match with St. John Paul II.

Evan Kidd won at first singles  (6-2, 6-3) for Connolly (9-5, 4-2 in MAC). Brian Ward (6-3, 6-4) and Alex Krynicki (6-0, 6-0) also won their singles match.

The Cougars await the state tournament.

Westport 3, Wareham 2

The Wildcats won their season finale against Wareham.

Westport finishes with a record of 4-10.

GIRLS TENNIS

Durfee 3, Brockton 2

The Hilltoppers pulled out a great win over league opponent Brockton.

Dalia Karam won an exciting match at first singles (5-7, 7-5, 7-5) for Durfee (7-11). Liv Rumsey finishes the season with a 12-6 record after winning at second singles, 6-2,6-1. Brooke Tabicas and Morgan Ledo won at first doubles, 6-4, 6-2.

Madi Tabicas played her first varsity match of the year at third singles, dropping a 5-7, 6-3 decision.

Diman 4, Somerset Berkley 1

The Bengals took four of five matches against Somerset Berkley.

Lindsey Moniz won her match at first singles, 6-4, 6-3 to complete the regular season with 6-0 record for Diman (6-2). Elizabeth Kinnane was victorious at second singles in a straight tiebreaker set.

Olivia Demelo and Kaydence Simoes came back to win their match at first doubles while Chloe Baker and Madison Pereira won in straight sets at second doubles.

Abbie O’Brien won her first-ever varsity match at third singles for the Raiders.

Wareham 5, Westport 0

The Wildcats dropped their season finale against Wareham.

Mikhaela Rego stepped up to play singles for the first time in her career and managed to win her first set 6-4 for Westport (8-6). She dropped her second set 0-6 and lost a third- set tiebreak, 3-10.

St. John Paul II 5, Bishop Connolly 0

The Cougars lost their season finale against St. John Paul II.

"The girls improved greatly from the start of the season and [I] look forward to the 2023 campaign," Connolly head coach Jim McGonigle said.

The Cougars finished the season at 0-14; 0-6 in MAC.
