Wednesday's HS roundup: York girls basketball pulls off tourney upset

TURNER, Maine - Junior McKayla Kortes scored a team-high 10 points and the 10th-seeded York High School girls basketball team upset No. 7 Leavitt, 43-21 on Wednesday in a Class B South preliminary round win.

The Wildcats, now 8-11 on the season, will face No. 2 Spruce Mountain on Saturday in a quarterfinal game. The game is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. at the Portland Expo.

Freshman Nya Avery added nine points for the Wildcats, who outscored Leavitt, 24-8 in the second half. Eleven of the 12 Wildcats who played scored.

"Our press created turnovers and turned the game into the fast pace that we like," York head coach Jess Stacy said. " Overall, great team effort and we are looking forward to facing Spruce Mountain."

BOOTHBAY, Maine - The 10th-seeded Rangers had three players reach double figures and pulled off this Class C South preliminary round upset.

Ben Hawkes had a game-high 19 points for the Rangers, while David Durling and Zac Foye both had 15 points. Foye also had eight rebounds. Nick Martine added five points off the Traip bench.

Traip (8-11) will play No. 3 Monmouth Academy (15-3) on Monday at the Augusta Civic Center.

EXETER - Ty Robinson scored the lone Exeter goal in this Division I loss at The Rinks at Exeter. Exeter goalie Logan Dixon had 19 saves.

Spaulding 7

Portsmouth/Newmarket 3

DOVER - Trevor Brennan had two goals and one assist for Spaulding in a Division I win at Dover Ice Arena.

Owen Nesbitt added a goal and an assist for the Red Raiders, while Anthony Allen, Logan Barker, Cole Enman, and Jackson Emrich all had one goal. Both Brayden Roy and Nate Gagnon both had two assists in the win.

Spaulding goalie Annabel Prochilo had 15 saves.

Oyster River 4

Winnacunnet 1

DURHAM - Cole Levesque, Liam Eddy, Trey Mason and Curtis Leitz all scored a goal for Oyster River (10-5) in this Division II win at the Whittemore Center.

With the win, the Bobcats moved ahead of Winnacunnet (9-4-2) into second place in Division II. Mason, Lance Abbott, Sawyer Levesque and Nolan Swiesz all had an assist.

Nolan Rennie scored the lone goal for Winnacunnet.

Oyster River goalie Cole Harwood had 20 saves, while counterpart Owen Helton had 15.

Somersworth/Coe-Brown 10

Timberlane 1

ROCHESTER - Jon Pelletier's two goals and one assist led Somersworth/Coe-Brown (7-8) to this Division II win at Rochester Ice Arena.

AJ Kozlowski had a goal and two assists for the BearCats, while Tully Keefe, Adam Lacerte, and Landon Midwood all had one goal and one assist.

Giovanni Green , Aidan Tibbets , Matt Bayko, and Jacob Potter all had one goal, and JR Norris, Owen Perra and Kasey Siering all had two assists. Melina Bandouveres  and Calvin Lambert both had one assist.  Somersworth goalie Bruce Marshall had 17 saves.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Exeter 11

Manchester Central/Memorial 5

EXETER - Molly Greene's five goals led Exeter to this Division I win at The Rinks in Exeter.

Caitlyn Knowles had three goals and two assists for the Blue Hawks, and Maddie Mann had two goals and two assists.

Melina Roth also scored for Exeter. Teammate Hailey O'Kane had two assists, and Ali MacDonald, Kyra Lachance, Ellie Tuttle and Maria Monge all had one.

Oyster River/Portsmouth 5

Concord 0

CONCORD - Eliza Farwell scored two goals, and Maggie Farwell, Elizabeth Walent and Kelly Zhang all had one for Oyster River/Portsmouth in this Division I win at Everett Arena.

Wallent added two assists for the ClipperCats, while Eliza Farwell, Mallory Desantis and Kira Jakobs all had one.
