Wednesday's HS sports highlights: NP softball wins 16th straight, tops John Glenn in 8

New Philadelphia's Olivia Jackson hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning for a thrilling 2-1 non-conference high school softball win over John Glenn on Senior Night at Tuscora Park Wednesday.

It was the 16th straight victory for the Quakers (16-4).

Julia Miller picked up the pitching win with 16 strikeouts as she scattered three hits. She helped her cause by hitting a single and a double.

Reese Loveday led the Quaker hitters with a single, double and home run. Jackson also had two hits for New Philadelphia.

Garaway 7, Claymont 2

Garaway picked up its 11th straight win as the Pirates battled back to take an IVC South win over Claymont.

Isabelle Tetreault got the start in the circle and went the distance. She surrendered four hits, allowed two runs, and struck out six.

The win gives Tetreault her 14th on the season, which ties the school record.

Amia Proper led the Pirates with a single, double and three RBIs and Lily Specht also drove in three runs with a home run. Belle Tetreault added two singles.

Tusky Valley 7, Ridgewood 0

Kylie Rohr tossed a one-hitter, fanned 17 and also had three hits at the plate to lead Tusky Valley to an IVC South win at Ridgewood.

Elly Rothenstein stayed red hot and blasted her fifth home run of the year. Kadence Stutz and Susan Thompson each hit a double for the Trojans.

Carah Mladek's leadoff single in the sixth inning ended the no-hitter for Rohr. The only other base runners for the Generals were Emma Rettos reaching on an error in the third and Ava Kulbacki drawing a walk in the seventh.

Indian Valley 10, Hiland 0

Celeste Rummell hit two home runs and a single and Mia Rose added a double, single and home run as Indian Valley blanked Hiland in a five-inning IVC crossover contest.

Sadie Dryden chipped in a double and two singles for winning pitcher Aubrie McPeek.

Central Catholic 15, East Canton 1

The Saints bats were active early as TCC scored seven runs on eight hits in the first inning on their way to an IVC North win against East Canton.

Maddie Ferrell pitched the complete game five-inning contest.

The Saints collected 16 hits. Jordyn Caldwell (two singles, double, RBI) and Jersi Hickman (three singles, RBI) led with three hits each. Adding two hits each were Maddie Ferrell (single, double, five RBIs), Delaney Savage (two singles, RBI), Maria Meiser (two singles, two RBIs), Edith Quiroz (two singles, two RBIs) and Cassidy Green (two singles, two RBIs).

West Holmes 14-8, Mansfield Sr. 0-0

Maddie Clark scattered three hits and struck out eight as West Holmes blanked Ohio Cardinal Conference foe Mansfield Senior in five innings in the first game of a doubleheader.

Leading the West Holmes hitters were Meghan Casey (3-for-3, double, RBI), Kenzie Woods (3-for-4, double, RBI, three runs), Ally Ogi (two hits, two RBIs), Keegan Uhl (two hits, two RBIs), Bree Parks (double) and Avery Yoder (double, three RBIs).

In the second game, Addison Yoder (2-for-3), Avery Yoder (two doubles, three RBIs) and Ogi (triple, RBI) led the way and Knights pitching did not allow a hit.

Northwest 5, Carrollton 0

Ella Lyons went the distance for the win and Caitlynn Edwards was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI as Northwest blanked visiting Carrollton in non-conference play.

Marleigh Osolin and Rylee Mercer had the lone hits for Carrollton.

Martins Ferry 8, Harrison Central 5

Martins Ferry defeated Harrison Central for the Buckeye 8 championship.

Boys tennis

Dover 5, New Phila 0

Dover blanked visiting New Philadelphia for a second time this season to improve to 9-1.

Nick Castricone defeated Reese Malcolm 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Daniel Pfeiffer topped Jodi Kopp 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while Micah Lint shut out Mason Clarkson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Both Dover doubles teams won by 6-0, 6-0 scores as Ethan Kopp and Jacob Murphy defeated Hudson Osborn and Owen Ohl at No. 1 and Ryan Nixon and Quinten Troyer beat Hohn Drexler and Trenton Huff.

Baseball

New Phila 5, Minerva 2

Winning pitcher Brenton Billman helped his cause with a single, double and two RBIs as host New Philadelphia defeated Minerva on Senior Night.

Billman went six innings, scattering four hits with nine strikeouts as the Quakers improved to 11-5. Ayden Baker pitched the seventh for the save.

Brandt Wells had two hits and scored two runs and Elliot Warner added a hit and had two RBIs.

Josh Smith led Minerva (5-4) with a pair of hits.

Hoban 5, Dover 3

Defending Division II state champion Akron Hoban notched a hard-fought non-conference win at Dover.

Hoban improved to 12-7, while Dover dropped to 14-3.

The Knights broke away from a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the fourth and held on for the win.

Matt Dummermuth drove home a pair of runs and Nolan Kellicker added an RBI for the Crimson Tornadoes.

Garaway 6, Claymont 1

Garaway beat Claymont for an IVC South win on the Hill at Sugarcreek on Senior Night.

Zach Misko picked up the win going the first four innings and Doran Mast threw the final three in relief for the Pirates (12-4, 5-4).

Brady Roden led the Pirate offense with two hits and an RBI. Alexander Roden singled in two and Cameron Coblentz doubled.

Jagger Morrison had an RBI single and Keaton Host added single and scored a run, while Mason Mehok also singled.

Ridgewood 6, Tusky Valley 3

Chase Booth sees Ridgewood heading in the right direction with the postseason just over a week away.

The senior was crucial in adding to that momentum on Wednesday.

Booth ripped a two-run triple to highlight a four-run first inning then ended Tusky Valley's bases-loaded threat on the mound in the sixth, as the Generals secured a 6-3 victory in an Inter-Valley Conference South Division contest.

The Trojans led 1-0 after their first at-bat as an error eventually led to an RBI groundout by Cole Clements.

But, Ridgewood came right back in the home half of the first. Trent Warden led off with a single, and Alex Stroup was hit by a pitch before Booth lined a triple to left field, bringing both home. Booth scored on an error during that play for a 3-1 lead, while Andy Troyer's two-out RBI single capped the four-run frame.

The Generals added a run in the third on Josiah Cahill's fielder's choice, while Brad Lab doubled home Clements in the fourth for the Trojans to make it 5-2.

Ridgewood added an insurance run in the fifth. Gabe Tingle led off with a walk before moving to third on an Aden Troyer single and scoring on an Andy Troyer sac fly.

Starting pitcher Andy Troyer was in control entering the sixth. He retired the first batter of the inning, but allowed a single and gave up two walks around an out to load the bases. His third walk of the inning brought in the Trojans' third run, and a ball to the next batter led to Lahna bringing in Booth.

He induced a popup from Austin Kohler to end the threat then retired all three Tusky Valley batters in the seventh to secure the save.

Troyer scattered six hits, struck out six and walked three in 5⅔ innings.

Warden and Aden Troyer had two hits apiece for the Generals (9-7).

Sandy Valley 11, Fairless 3

Sandy Valley picked up its third straight win with a non-conference decision.

Nick Petro went six innings, striking out 10 and allowing no earned runs to notch the pitching win. He also helped himself at the plate with two hits.

Kaiden Mastri went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs and Ben Petro added two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals (9-9).

Justin Burkett had three singles and an RBI for Fairless (5-11), while Zack Long and Austin Keck drove in runs.

Carrollton 2, Canton South 1

Isaac Moore and Jon Birong each drove in a run and Cayden Rininger was the winning pitcher as Carrollton recorded an Eastern Buckeye Conference win at Canton South.

Rininger went six innings and Cayden Smith pitched the seventh for the save.

West Holmes 10, Mansfield Senior 0

West Holmes' Noah Clark and Blake McCombs combined for a five-inning Ohio Cardinal Conference no-hitter on Senior Night.

Clark got the win as he went four innings, striking out nine and walking two. McCombs finished up, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Gino Dinardi had a pair of hits to lead the Knights (10-10, 4-5).

Coshocton 3, New Lexington 2

The Redskins made the most of five hits and some productive outs to stay in the Muskingum Valley League Small School Division race with the home win.

This game was completed from earlier in the season when rain suspended it in the second inning.

With Meadowbrook losing and Morgan winning on Wednesday, the Raiders lead the Small School Division at 10-5 with the Colts 9-5 and the Redskins 8-5 before Thursday's league play.

Cadin Whiteus and Kobe Rust drive in runs to give Coshocton a 3-2 lead.

East Canton 9, Central Catholic 3

Visiting East Canton recorded an IVC North win over Tuscarawas Central Catholic as Chase Vacco got the pitching win, while Grayden Clark and Steven Stewart each had two singles.

Chase Harper and Gavin Douglass had two singles each for the Saints (2-14, 1-7).

Harrison Central 8, Wheeling Park, 9 in.

Harrison Central notched its 12th win of the season with a nine-inning victory at Wheeling Park.

JV Baseball

The Indian Valley JVs lost 8-3 to Hiland. The Braves are now 6-8 on the season.

The Sandy Valley and Fairless JV teams finished tied 8-8 after eight innings as they ran out of daylight.

Harrison Central trimmed Steubenville 4-3.
