Wednesday's Maine college roundup: Bowdoin picks up a couple of baseball wins

Mar. 15—Bowdoin won a pair of baseball games against Fredonia on Wednesday at Auburndale, Florida.

In the opener, Bowdoin (3-1) scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to a 20-5 win over the Blue Devils (2-5). Richie McNamara had two hits and five RBI and Jake Sullivan got the win.

In the second game, a 7-1 win, Luke Chessie hit a three-run homer in the fifth. Kevin Murray added two RBI and Jack Mullen struck out 10 in five innings to pick up the win.

CROWN 5, SOUTHERN MAINE 3: Ashton Long had three RBI on four hits as the Polars (6-3) topped the Huskies (1-6) in Auburndale, Fla.

Howie Hatton went 3 for 4 with a solo homer in the ninth. Aidan Volk-Specht pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out seven.

Christian Siciliano led USM with two hits and an RBI. Kyle Skolfield took the loss, pitching 6 1/3 innings.

MAINE 15, GEORGE WASHINGTON 8: Colin Plante launched a solo homer and finished with four RBI as the Black Bears (4-10) ended a four-game skid with a win over the Colonials (4-14) in Washington, D.C.

Quinn McDaniel went 2 for 4 with three RBI for Maine. Jeremiah Jenkins added a solo homer and Jeff Rainess had two doubles. Blaine Cockburn struck out five in five innings for the win.

Steve Ditomaso hit a grand slam for George Washington. Michael Kohn had three doubles and three RBI.

MEN'S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 18, NAZARETH 8: Patrick Fitzgerald had four goals and three assists as the Polar Bears (3-1) cruised past the Golden Flyers (1-6) in Tampa, Florida.

Will Byrne also scored four goals for Bowdoin. Robert Hobbs made 12 saves.

Eric Almquist made 16 saves for Nazareth, which got three goals from Braeden McKercher.

SOUTHERN MAINE 12, NORWICH 9: Nick James had six goals and four assists to power the Huskies (1-4) over the Cadets (1-4) at Gorham.

Schuyler Wetmore added three goals and four assists for USM. Omar Contreras scored twice and Tanner Nussinow made 14 saves.

Coley Bagwell, Alex Johnston and Chris Smith all had two goals for Norwich. Eric Hrabal turned away 12 shots.

SOFTBALL

U. OF NEW ENGLAND 14, GALLAUDET 7: Becca Dumont and Abby Miner each drove in three runs as the Nor'easters (2-4) handled the Bison (4-6) in Kissimmee, Florida.

Miner blasted a two-run shot in the first and had an RBI double in the fifth. Grace Tutt went 3 for 4 with two RBI for UNE and Kara McDonald pitched four innings in relief for the win.

Elaine Swecker had a three-run double for Gallaudet.
