Week 1 High School Football Scores: Graceville, Rutherford struggle in opening week

BAY COUNTY— The first week was full of highs and lows as the high school football season kicked off. We saw some dominant performances from Bay, North Bay Haven, and Chipley. We also saw teams look like they are still going through the motions of fall camp with Rutherford, Vernon, and Graceville.

The News Herald has wrapped up all the emotions, excitement, and disappoints of the opening week for with our analysis and scores of our local games.

Bay 37, Arnold 7

Bay had an impressive win under new head coach Jeremy Brown and new quarterback Seth Warren. Arnold were without starting quarterback Seth Hernandez and it showed. Arnold offense went right down the field to score on the opening drive and couldn't do much afterwards. Bay's defense came up with two interceptions and their offense was clicking.

Jacques Lee, Will Smiley and Javonté Davis were too much to handle for Arnold's defense. Lee had two touchdown receptions including a 40-plus yard screen pass he took to the house. Smiley had a long touchdown reception as well. Warren finished the night with three passing touchdowns. Davis just bulldozed through defenders and refuse to go down all night. Bay's balance attack on offense was too much for the injury plagued Arnold squad.

Panama City area high school football: Mosley, Chipley top Week 1 power rankings

Mosley 24, Delaware Valley 23

Mosley wins a nail-bitter against Delaware Valley in Orlando. The two playoffs caliber teams meet at a neutral site and the game was anyone's to be had. Mosley struggled with some cheap penalty calls early one but kept it their composure.

The Mosley defense made a huge goalline stand in the last minute of the game to secure a victory.

A pass interference called on Mosley put the ball inside the ten for Delaware Valley. The next play Delaware Valley quarterback Logan Olsommer finds his tight end Aiden Black over the middle. Black takes a few steps, stretches out for the end zone, and then two Mosley defenders pile on him to knock the ball loose. Mosley recovers the fumble in the end zone and secures the victory.

Liberty County 21, Vernon 0

Liberty County shuts out Vernon. This makes nine straight losses dating back to 2020 for Vernon. This Vernon squad was once the 'cream of the crop' in Washington county but the mighty have fallen. Vernon will look to bounce back against Franklin county next Friday.

Chipley 41, Rutherford 0

Rutherford youth has really shown in the kickoff classic preseason game and now in opening week. Chipley flexed its muscle and cruised pass them for shutout victory at home. For the Rutherford, it doesn't get any easier as they host Blountstown next Friday.

Blountstown 54, Freeport 20

Blountstown was able to contain the Freeport quarterback-wide receiver duo of Ashton Nunes and Robbie Durgin. Blountstown will keep the wins rolling as they are heavy favorites over Rutherford in their next matchup.

Port St. Joe 39, Jefferson County 8

Port St. Joe has a statement win of their own over Jefferson County to start their 2022 campaign. Port St. Joe alson extends their win streak to three in a row over Jefferson County.

Geneva (AL) 46, Bozeman 21

Disappointing start for Bozeman and they will have to quickly bounce back because their next two opponents are Liberty County and Baker.

Holmes County 51, Graceville 0

This was one of three shutouts this week. This also Graceville's second shutout in a row dating back to last season. Believe or not this game was much closer last season with Holmes County barely squeaking by with a 28-6 win.

Sneads 38, Cottondale 16

Cottondale had a better showing than the other teams that sat at the bottom of the rankings to start the season. They didn't get shutout but they also didn't win either. Maybe this small momentum can carry them on the road next week when they take on Rocky Bayou Christian in Niceville.

North Bay Haven 35, Franklin County 7

North Bay Haven makes a statement win but for what it is worth they always beat teams that are seemingly on their level. Their problem is that when the competition stiffens, they always seem to not be able to punch back and hang with the big boys. Let's see if that changes this season. They have a huge test against Holmes County next week.
