All the Week 1 South Shore high school football scores and highlights

The wait is finally over.

The high school football season is underway.

We've been eagerly awaiting the start of the season, so check out our preseason coverage. We've ranked the area's top 10 teams, predicted all local Week 1 games, and highlighted 100 (and a few more) players to watch this fall.

Scituate, Rockland, Cohasset and Randolph are defending state champions. The season kicked off on Thursday night with Duxbury edging Hanover and East Bridgewater narrowly beating West Bridgewater.

We'll keep updating this scoreboard all weekend.

Week 1

Thursday, Sept. 8

Duxbury 21, Hanover 7: Duxbury quarterback Matt Festa threw a TD to pass to Chris Walsh and ran for another score in the win. Alex Barlow put the game away with a 2-yard TD run with 2:19 remaining. Hanover's Ben Scalzi threw a 19-yard TD pass to Mehki Bryan.

East Bridgewater 18, West Bridgewater 14: EB's Gavin McLoud scored the winning TD with an 8-yard run late in the fourth quarter. Ethan Pohl had a 1-yard TD run while Will Health kicked a 26-yard field goal. Will DeLuca (1-yard run) and James Harris (27-yard run) scored TDs for WB.

Friday, Sept. 9

Hull 35, Blue Hills 12: Austin Bongo returned a fumble 91 yards for a touchdown in the final minute of the first half as the Pirates opened their season with a non-league road win. Bongo (3 catches for 119 yards) also caught two TD passes – a 64-yarder from fellow receiver Nick Tiani on a trick play and a 17-yarder from QB Luke Richardson. John Gianibas rushed for 112 yards and returned a fumble 30 yards for a score. Blue Hills QB Brayden Mahoney threw a pair of 24-yard TD passes – to Shane Draper and Rhys Draper.

Brockton 13, Barnstable 6: Joey Cappielo threw a TD pass to Cameron Monteiro and Mauricio Powell ran for another TD in the win.

Norwell 27, Nauset 0: Ryan Fitzgerald scored two TDs, and Derek Fitzgerald and Will Bostrom had one apiece as the Clippers won big at home.

Seekonk 28, Carver 20: The Crusaders dropped their season opener. Jameson Helms ran 14 times for 155 yards and a TD. He also hauled in six receptions for 92 yards and a score. Tyler Lennox threw for 196 yards. Robbie Peterson, who had 76 yards receiving, returned a kickoff for a score.

Triton 23, Randolph 6: The defending Division 8 state champs lost on the road.

Woburn 35, Braintree 19: The Wamps dropped their opener at home.

Middleboro 35, Apponequet 14: Nate Tullish (three rushing TDs) led the way for the Sachems. Jacob Briggs ran for a TD and threw a 47-yard TD pass to Nate Goodine. Jack Kavaleski also forced a safety.

Canton 30, Dighton-Rehoboth 7: The Bulldogs won on the road.

St. John’s Prep 49, Marshfield 14: The Rams lost on the road. Quarterback Anthony Molander accounted for both Marshfield TDs – he threw a 45-yard pass to Brady Crowley and ran for a 2-yard score.

Cohasset 28, Abington 6: Will Baker ran for a pair of TDs and threw two more in the win for the Skippers. Isaiah Ricketson ran for a TD in the loss.

Quincy 21, Archbishop Williams 0: Gabe Rodrigues scored on runs of 2, 13 and 21 yards as the Presidents blanked the Bishops at home. Rodrigues finished with 163 yards on the ground and a 2-point conversion. Helena Middleton kicked a PAT.

Milford 42, Bridgewater-Raynham 0: The Trojans were shut out in their opener on the road.

Oliver Ames 41, Brookline 12: Chad Silva rushed for 160 yards and a pair of TDs as the Tigers cruised at home. Silva's two scores – an 8-yarder and a 24-yarder – put OA up 14-0 in the second quarter. Wayne Casey threw a 56-yard TD pass to Thomas Whiteside for a 20-0 lead at halftime. The Tigers got second-half rushing scores from Casey (6 yards), Harold Smith (18 yards) and C.J. Crocker (19 yards).

Falmouth 20, Plymouth North 6: The Blue Eagles lost at home.

Greater New Bedford Voke 28, Southeastern 19: Nick Levine threw for 136 yards and ran for a TD in the loss. Thomas Hustins added a rushing TD for the Hawks.

King Philip 35, BC High 0: The Eagles dropped their opener on the road.

Weymouth 25, Malden Catholic 0: Tyler Nordstrom threw three TD passes – 32 yards to Aiden Henderson, 14 yards to Dante Tordiglione and 31 yards to Cam Fernandez – as the Wildcats pulled away in the fourth quarter for the home win. Mike Stevenson added a defensive touchdown, recovering a fumble in the end zone. Weymouth didn't allow the visitors to cross midfield.

Stoughton 28, Norwood 13: The Black Knights won the season opener.

Whitman-Hanson 18, Pembroke 13: Brendan Moore kicked a pair of field goals, from 32 and 29 yards, to give host W-H a 6-0 lead at halftime, and Will Frazier returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a TD. Evan Casey's 1-yard run pushed the lead to 18-0 after three quarters before the Titans made it close late on Jake Falco's 70-yard TD pass to Jake Tosone and Brendan Kanya's 14-yard TD run.

Plymouth South 33, Silver Lake 0: Casious Johnson ran for 168 yards and 3 TDs on 19 carries as the Panthers won the season opener. Justin LaChance added 89 yards and a TD on 3 carries, and Cole Brunstrom had 110 all-purpose yards and a score. Jackson Elliott recorded an interception.

Hingham 19, Rockland 14: Jack Nicholas scored the winning TD for the Harbormen with 1:17 remaining. Harry Bradshaw kicked a pair of field goals and had three onside kicks recovered. Rockland QB Michael Moriarty played well in the loss and threw a 39-yard TD pass to Jacob Coulstring.

Milton 33, Scituate 26: First-year starting QB Owen McHugh threw three TD passes and ran for another score as the host Wildcats defeated the Sailors, the defending Division 4 state champs. McHugh, taking over for graduated star Chase Vaughan, had scoring passes to Luke Sammon (40 yards), Mike Fulton (20 yards) and Jack Finnegan (27 yards) as Milton built a 26-7 halftime lead. McHugh added a 3-yard TD run in the second half. Finnegan scored on a 6-yard run to put Milton ahead for good, 13-7, in the first quarter. Scituate's TDs came from Alex Burrill (70-yard run, 11-yard run), Colin Morley (2-yard run) and William Chatterton (4-yard pass from Jackson Belsan).

Nashoba Tech 28, South Shore Tech 6: Todd Egan threw a 25-yard TD pass to Jared Madden for the Vikings' lone score. Egan rushed for 39 yards, and Madden rushed for 34 yards. Matt Sage led South Shore with 67 rushing yards.

Saturday, Sept. 10

Cardinal Spellman 12, Nantucket 0: Jack Duffy threw a 24-yard TD pass to Jay Comeau and ran for another. He also had an interception in the win.

North Quincy 44, Somerville 0: Nate Caldwell returned two kicks for TDs in the win – a 63-yarder off a free kick following a safety and a 51-yarder on a punt. Sophomore quarterback Mikey Galligan was 5-of-7 passing for 104 yards in his debut. He threw scoring passes of 25 yards to Cydney Green and 35 yards to Nate Sampson as NQ took a 30-0 lead into halftime. Ariel White (14 yards) and Devin Tran (2 yards) had second-half TD runs. Ramire Johnson recorded the safety, and Caldwell kicked six PATs. Dylan Clifford led a strong showing by the offensive line that paved the way for 160 rushing yards; 10 different players had carries.
