Week 11 Race To The Finish: NJSIAA Group Championships
Friday and Saturday’s Group Championships for GMC and Skyland teams were held at three venues. I attended Friday’s NJSIAA Groups 2 and 4 at Franklin H.S. and Saturday’s Groups 1 and 3 event in Pennsauken.
The conditions on Friday were nearly perfect as the temperatures were in the low 80’s with a breeze pretty much throughout the day at the expansive Warriors campus which resembles a small college venue.
Saturday near the Pennsylvania border along the Delaware River and Philadelphia was overcast with a light drizzle that proved to be a nuisance during the final hours of competition at the idyllic Pennsauken Indians gated facility in South Jersey.
East Brunswick boys finally got over the hump beating South Brunswick in the biggest meet of the year, the 2022 State Group 4 Championship, as the Vikings were looking to make it a sweep of the Bears in the final team competition.
If Friday’s results were a foreshadowing of what was to transpire the following day, the Bears had to feel good about their chances of winning their first state title since 2010 which they shared with Hackensack.
Competing in the final Day 1 event, the high jump, senior Zack Muyingo may have upset the apple cart by finishing in fourth in one of South Brunswick’s most dominant events.
With 10 participants remaining in the event and the bar set at 6-04, the Vikings trio of Damarion Potts, Yathin Vemula and Brian Rawls were in a familiar situation, by sweeping the event and scoring 24 points while finishing 1-2-3.
Muyingo, Watchung Hills Jordan Hartley and eventual champion Dillon Paige of Cherry Hill East, all had different designs on how they wanted to finish their senior seasons.
All three would jump personal bests as Paige finally hit 6-08 after three years of futility at the height, while Hartley and Muyingo soared to their new PRs of 6-06, as they are peaking at the perfect time.
The four team points scored by the Bears' Zack Muyingo and the 14 fewer than normal for the Vikings, opened the door from rival East Brunswick which would rely on their strengths in the sprints and relays on Day 2.
