Ray scored on touchdown runs in the first and fourth quarter and caught two touchdown passes from Evan Spencer in the second quarter as well. Up 20-7 at halftime, Spencer added a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and the Cumberland defense earned some points on a safety later in the same quarter.

EG quarterback Alex DeTomasis threw two TDs in the loss, connecting with Cade Thomas in the second quarter and Pat Kiernan in the fourth.

Portsmouth 26, Westerly 10

With their starting quarterback injured, Neal Tullson switched from running back to the QB position and looked just fine, rushing for 200 yards and three touchdowns in the Patriots’ 26-10 win over the Bulldogs.

According to the Newport Daily News, Tullson had three days to prepare to play the position, which will be his for the foreseeable future. Tullson carried the ball 24 times, rushing for exactly 200 and the Portsmouth defense kept the high-powered Westerly offense from doing much damage.

Division III

Coventry 45, Toll Gate 7

Tommy Turner jump-started the Oakers’ offense and it never slowed down in a 45-7 win over the Titans.

Turner scored on a 68 yard rush in the first quarter and caught a 45-yard pass from Gavin Nurmi for another score before the quarter was up. In the second quarter freshman Nate Petrarca scored on two short TD runs and Ason Jones had another. Nurmi rounded out the scoring with a 1-yard TD in the fourth quarter.

West Warwick 13, Ponaganset 7

A defensive battle, the Wizards got a fourth-quarter rushing touchdown from DionDre Chase in the fourth quarter to make the difference in their 13-7 win over the Chieftains.

West Warwick went up first, scoring on a 30-yard touchdown pass by Brady Miale to Jacob Suffoletto in the second quarter. Ponaganset responded as Rob Grenga found Bryce Peterson for a 12-yard score to tie the game going into halftime.

Both defenses clamped down before Chase and the Wizards got into the end zone a final time to grab their first win of the D-III season.

Lincoln 33, North Smithfield 7

The Lions kept up their roaring start as their run game was in control in a 33-7 win over the Northmen.

Tyler Durang had himself a big night, rushing for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Jon Nicoll threw for two scores – one to Sean Clifford and another to Joseph Conti – and Ryan Plante also added a score.

Rogers 25, Johnston 24

After watching their first-half lead dissolve, the Vikings came up big in the clutch as Jordan Neves caught a 40-yard touchdown from Cisco Aponte and Nixon Brownell’s extra point with 38 seconds left was the difference in a win over the Panthers.

Rogers went up 18-6 early after getting a 52-yard touchdown run by Dayvon London and touchdown runs from 20 and 8 yards by Dylan Walker, the last coming in the third quarter that put the Vikings up 18-6.

Johnston came back with touchdown runs from Steve Finegan before Rogers got the game-winning score.

Middletown 26, Classical 14

Quarterback Julien Delacruz had it all working, helping the Islanders build a big first-half lead they’d never let go of.

Delacruz was practically perfect in the first two quarters, completing 10 of 14 passes for 162 yards and four touchdowns, giving Middletown a 26-7 lead at the break. Trent Ames had a 23-yard TD catch, Trent Sotelo brought in a 50-yard bomb, Andrew Doody caught a 5-yarder and R.J. Wiggins had the fourth on a 10-yard score.

Division IV

Tiverton 19, Scituate 14

The Tigers ended a 16-game losing streak, scoring two touchdowns in the final three minutes to upend the Spartans.

Tiverton’s comeback started in the fourth down 14-7. Malcolm Michaud caught a 10-yard pass from Ben Sowa, but the conversion failed. Down 14-13, the Tigers’ defense came up with a stop and in the final minute, Sowa connected with Rajin Ramunno on a 32-yard pass for the game-winning score.

“We’ve been preaching to the kids not to quit. That was the biggest thing we took out of this,” Tiverton coach Dillon Sheridan told the Newport Daily News. “At halftime we were down, but nobody was hanging their heads.”
