Week 3 preview: Indian Valley invades Dover; New Philadelphia opens OCC play

Indian Valley at Dover

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday at Crater Stadium.

Last week: Dover (2-0) defeated Akron East 35-0. Mitchell Martin led the Crimson Tornadoes with 138 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. He has 310 yards total through two games. Dover QBs Ben Hamm and Martin were a perfect 7-for-7 for 50 yards and a score. Jackson Storm led the defense with 5 tackles and Brett DeVault had an interception.

Indian Valley (1-1) lost to Roosevelt (D.C.) 22-17. Sam Carter rushed for 36 yards and a TD on 13 carries and was 7-for-11 passing for 68 yards. Brogan Burcher, Quake Beatty and Breydan Parsons led the defense with nine tackles apiece.

Last year's game was canceled due to COVID. The teams have met 12 times since 1996, with the Crimson Tornadoes winning all 12 games.

New Philadelphia at Wooster

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday at Wooster Stadium.

Last week: New Philadelphia (1-1) lost to Steubenville 20-0. The Quakers were limited to 78 total yards by Big Red, which has registered back-to-back shutouts to open the season. The status of senior QB Kurtis Tetzloff for Friday's game isn't known. His play has been limited to defense because of an injury. This is the inaugural Ohio Cardinal Conference game for the Quakers.

Wooster (1-1) lost to Wadsworth 49-21. QB Luke Snowbarger was 17-of-30 for 186 yards and two TDs, but — like the Quakers — had difficulty running the ball. The Generals were also done in by four second-half turnovers.

Wooster won last season's game, 56-14, but New Philadelphia holds a 37-27-2 edge in the series that began in 1904.

Claymont at Fairless

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday at Brideweser Stadium.

Last week: Claymont (0-2) lost to Canton South 37-8. The Mustangs are happy to get a week of normalcy after switching opponents last Tuesday. Claymont was scheduled to play Cleveland East Tech, but the Scarabs haven't played because of a lack of approved equipment. Luckily, Canton South's opponent, a Columbus city school, also canceled, leaving the Mustangs a short drive north.

Fairless (2-0) defeated Tusky Valley 40-7. The Falcons broke open the game with a 26-point second-quarter. QB Carson Colucci completed 13 of 16 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown, while also running for a score. Landyn Seal returned an interception for a TD.

Fairless won last year's matchup, 43-0, the first meeting between the programs.

Tuslaw at Tusky Valley

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday at Trojan Stadium.

Last week: Tusky Valley (0-2) lost to Fairless 40-7. Jessie Carr ran the ball 22 times for 88 yards, while QB Cole Clements was 12 of 28 passing for 82 yards and a TD, to Tristan Carroll. Beau Wolf led the receivers with five catches for 33 yards. The Trojans were hurt by two turnovers, one of which was an interception returned for a touchdown.

Tuslaw (1-1) lost to Dalton 48-0. The Bulldogs outgained the Mustangs 558-99. Dalton amassed nearly 400 yards on the ground.

Tuslaw won last year's meeting 40-14.

Central Catholic at Wheeling (W.Va.) Central Catholic

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bishop Schmitt Field

Last week: Central Catholic opened its home season with a 20-6 win over Grove City Christian. Thayne Mahaffey had a fine all-around game, finishing with 78 yards and two TDs on the ground, and five receptions for 52 yards. QB Jordan Cherry added 225 yards passing on 19-of-34 completions, with a TD pass to Chase Ciekanski (3 catches for 59 yards). Cherry also rushed 12 times for 58 yards and Kenton Renkker caught seven passes for 81 yards.

Wheeling Central Catholic opened its season with a 24-7 win over Ambridge (Pa.). RB Lorenzo Ferrera rushed 11 times for 121 yards and two TDs and Riley Watkins had 127 yards on 16 carries and caught a touchdown pass. The Maroon Knights play just one of their nine games against a West Virginia school.

Wheeling Central won last's year matchup, 52-18, the first meeting all-time.

Dalton at Garaway

Kickoff: 7 p.m. at Garaway Field

Last week: Garaway (2-0) turned in an impressive 33-3 win over Waynedale as Logan Yoder went 24-for-33 through the air for 245 yards and three TDs. The top receiver, statistically, was Gabe Amicone with seven catches for 64 yards, but Jensen Garber (5-57-2 TDs), Dillon Soehnlen (7-60-1 TD) and Brady Roden (4-53) also had really good nights. Soehnlen was also the top rusher, with 11 carries for 54 yards and a score.

Dalton (2-0) is also strong offensively, averaging 45 points per game and pitching a shutout over Tuslaw last weekend. Sammy Tomlinson rushed for 146 yards and a TD on 13 carries, while Colin Pearson completed 10 of 16 passes for 167 yards and two scores. Greyson Siders is a receiving threat, with two catches for 121 yards and two scores last week.

Garaway won last year's meeting 21-7, en route to an unbeaten regular season.

Conotton Valley at Newcomerstown

Kickoff: 7 p.m. at Newcomerstown Stadium.

Last week: Newcomerstown (1-1) turned in an impressive 54-0 win over visiting Beallsville. Conotton Valley lost its home opener to Malvern, 21-20. Zach Putnam was 13-of-28 passing for 136 yards and a touchdown, and Evan Rise led the rushers with 39 carries for 159 yards and two scores.

Newcomerstown won last year's game 26-0, and leads the all-time series with the Rockets 18-5-0.

Caldwell at Strasburg

Kickoff: 7 p.m. at Franklin Park Ron Hurst Field.

Last week: Strasburg (0-2) lost on the road to Waterloo, 40-14. Gage Moore led the Tigers with 39 yards rushing and he was 9-for-27 through the air for 195 yards and two scores. Parker Edwards (3-77) and Kaden Thomas (3-51) led the receivers.

Caldwell (2-0) defeated Steubenville Catholic Central 48-0 and has allowed just six points over the first two weeks.

Caldwell won last year's contest, 61-40, in the first meeting between the teams.
