Week 5 Brevard football roundup: EG still perfect, Cocoa wins big at Melbourne

Brevard County has just one unbeaten team after Week 5, while another area squad got its first victory of 2022 and spoiled another's home opener in the process.

Cocoa 44, Melbourne 3

In Melbourne, the Bulldogs fell behind by two scores just two seconds before the end of a competitive opening half, but the Tigers controlled the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Cocoa evened its record at 2-2 with a second consecutive victory. Melbourne dropped to 3-2.

Blake Boda threw five touchdown passes after throwing seven last week.

Melbourne will open District 11-4S play next week at Harmony. Cocoa's next game is Oct. 7 at Sanford Seminole, currently ranked first in Class 4M by the USA Today Florida Network. The Tigers were third in 2S.

Osceola 30, Rockledge 7

At McLarty Stadium, the Raiders lost for the first time this season, falling to the team from Kissimmee.

Trailing by three touchdowns at halftime, Rockledge drove into the red zone in the fourth quarter but lost the ball by fumble. Dmari Jenkins made up for that shortly thereafter with an interception and a 20-yard runback to the end zone.

Osceola, the No. 5 team in the Class 4S poll of the USA Today Florida Network, scored the first two touchdowns on passes from David Buggs.

Rockledge, ranked second in Class 3S this week by the USA Today Florida Network, plays next at Manatee on Oct. 7.

Palm Bay 14, Central 7

Palm Bay celebrated homecoming with its fourth win in five games.

The Pirates scored all their points in the second quarter, the first on a 53-yard passing play from Jayden Mobley to Deuel Fider. Mobley made it 14-0 on a 1-yard run minutes later.

The visitors from Fort Pierce scored off a blocked punt in the fourth.

Next week, Palm Bay hosts Astronaut in a Friday District 12-2S game.

Heritage 20, Merritt Island 6

The Panthers got their first win of the 2022 season as Merritt Island opened its home season.

Joe Tenta connected with Trey Ulmer for a 52-yard touchdown pass, and Tenta scored on the ground from the 3-yard line.

The Mustangs got their only score on a 95-yard kick return by Jordan Woods.

Merritt Island visits Eau Gallie for a District 10-3S game on Friday. The Panthers open District 11-4S play at home against Viera.

Titusville 59, MCC 3

In Melbourne, Xavian Taylor scored three times on the ground as the Terriers evened their record at 2-2 while breaking their two-game losing streak.

Titusville got rushing touchdowns from Taylor for 22 yards and James Miles for 6 in the first period, and the defense held the Hustlers to a field goal after MCC drove into the red zone in the same quarter.

In the second, Josiah Allen threw three touchdown passes and ran for another as the Terriers built a 52-3 halftime lead.

Titusville hosts District 12-2S opponent Space Coast in a week. MCC hosts Father Lopez to open District 4-1S play.

Eau Gallie 28, Harmony 13

Alvarez Baker caught a pair of touchdown passes from Mari Crooms, while Tay Welch and Delonte Williams scored on the ground to keep the Commodores unbeaten through five games.

Harmony's only touchdown came on an interception return in the second quarter.

Eau Gallie hosts Merritt Island in Week 6 for a District 10-3S game.

Satellite 27, Astronaut 0

The Scorpions did all their scoring on the ground as they improved to 3-2.

Achaia Jones scored three times, and Jaylen Bradley capped it off in the fourth with a touchdown run of his own for the home team.

Astronaut plays District 12-2S next, and the Scorps host Bayside in District 10-3S.

Holy Trinity 31, Faith Christian 8

Brogan McNabb threw three touchdown passes for the Tigers, who won their second game in four tries. Both of McNabb's passing scores went to Jaeden McMillan, for 21 yards in the first quarter and 5 yards in the fourth.

Holy Trinity host District 4-1S foe Halifax Academy in Week 6.

Cocoa Beach 34, Halifax Academy 0

The Minutemen returned from Ormond Beach with a shutout, improving to 3-1 on the season.

Palm Beach Christian visits Cocoa Beach in a week.

Baker County 34, Viera 14

The visitors built a three-score lead by halftime and held off the Hawks.

Mikey Schmidt scored a pair of touchdowns on passes from Chase Cromartie.

Viera visits District 11-4S opponent Heritage next.

Tohopekaliga 46, Space Coast 7

The team from Kissimmee brought an unbeaten record to Port St. John and left 4-0.

Space Coast fell to 1-3 after scoring the game's first touchdown.

The Vipers visit Titusville in District 12-2S play next.

Shorecrest Prep 47, Merritt Island Christian 0

The Cougars fell on the road. Now 3-1, they'll host Master's Academy of Vero Beach on Friday.

St. John's Country Day 29, Calvary Chapel 26

In Orange Park, the Eagles dropped to 0-5. Calvary visits Eastern Christian in Orlando in Week 6.
