Week 5 Spartanburg-area high school football roundup: West Florence hands Byrnes 1st loss

It was a crazy week of football in Spartanburg County. And the matchups were plentiful: Headlined by West Florence and Byrnes, as well as a Gaffney win over Fort Dorchester behind a big night from quarterback Grayson Loftis, and App State commit DJ Porter carried Dorman past River Bluff.

Here is a roundup of all the action from Week 5 of high school football in Spartanburg County:

Gaffney 35, Fort Dorchester 31: Loftis's 32-yard touchdown pass to Drew Medley with under seven minutes left in the game was the difference. All three of the Duke commit's touchdowns came in the second half. Quashon Tate, Jaiden McDowell and Loftis all rushed for touchdowns. Medley and Emazon Littlejohn caught touchdowns and combined for 14 receptions for 201 yards.

Spartanburg 35, Mauldin 3: Spartanburg improved to 2-3 with the win over Mauldin. The Mavericks are reeling after opening their season with a commanding win over Boiling Springs.

Broome 27, Woodruff 20: Broome junior quarterback Kamajay Brackett-Brannon led the Centurions to a big win over Woodruff to improve to 3-3. Bracket-Brannon had over 250 total yards of offense and two touchdowns. Jaylen McGill scored twice on the ground for Broome and Carlos Cohen caught a touchdown. Kory Scott had nine catches for 67 yards and a touchdown for Woodruff.

Blue Ridge 53, Landrum 21: Blue Ridge (3-3) got back on track with a win as Landrum falls to 2-3.

West Florence 22, Byrnes 19: On the last play of the game, West Florence quarterback Deuce Hudson's TD pass to Darren Lloyd gave West Florence the win. WF scored 15 fourth-quarter points to hand Byrnes its first loss. The Rebels mustered 178 total yards of offense, led by RJ Livingston's 111 rushing yards and a touchdown. Byrnes quarterback Colby Shaw was 9-for-23 passing for 79 yards and a score. Will Fowler had 4.5 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.

Chapman 31, Union County 6: After an 0-2 start, Chapman is now 2-1 in its last three games -- with the lone loss coming against undefeated Clinton.

Colleton Prep 48, Spartanburg Christian 14: SCA fell to 2-3 with the loss to CPA. Asante Jenkins has been the player to watch for the Warriors, as he's approaching the 500-yard mark rushing.

Clover 26, Boiling Springs 0: After beating Greer last week, the Bulldogs were shutout by a Clover team that's shown signs of improvement from a year ago.

Dorman 39, River Bluff 23: Dorman remains undefeated after a commanding win over River Bluff. The Cavs have won each game this season by multiple scores. DJ Porter had a 66-yard receiving touchdown to open the game and rushed for over 200 yards for Dorman. Demarius Foster scored twice on the ground and quarterback Hudson Talley was 5-for-11 passing for 101 yards and a TD. Kendell Lewis rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown; Matthew Karban had a 35-yard field goal.
