Week 6 girls basketball recap: Bristol Eastern’s Tony Floyd wins his 600th game, Windsor’s Ayanna Franks gets her 1,000th point

Bristol Eastern girls basketball coach Tony Floyd won his 600th career game Saturday, with a 41-12 win over Career.

He joins Holy Cross coach Frank Lombardo, who also won his 600th game earlier this month.

“It’s exciting for myself and the program,” Floyd said. “It would have never happened without the past and present coaching staff I’ve had and the people I’ve worked with and also the players I had in the past and the present.”

Floyd, whose record is 600-343, started coaching in the 1979-80 season, right after he graduated from college. His teams won the Class LL title three times, in 1983, 1990 and 1991 and the Class L championship in 1987. He coached Laura Lishness, who graduated in 1987 and went on to help UConn to its first Final Four in 1991.

Bristol Eastern is 6-7 this season and has lost three games by three or less points, including two close games last week when Floyd was stuck at No. 599.

“I’ve got a young team,” he said. “I’ve got a couple freshmen, a couple sophomores out there. They’re experiencing things, they’ve never experienced. But they’re getting better.
