Week 6 high school football roundup: Last-minute drive lifts Newbury Park past Moorpark

Now Brady Smigiel can add last-minute heroics to his first-season exploits.

With his team locked in a 28-28 deadlock, Newbury Park High's freshman quarterback marched the Panthers 65 yards in the final 2:30, culminating in a game-winning scoring toss to Charlie Simmons. The 35-28 victory over resurgent Moorpark improves the Panthers to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Canyon League chase.

"Gritty game. Moorpark played us tough," said Newbury Park coach Joe Smigiel.

Brady Smigiel finished 22 of 33 for 209 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Simmons caught 11 receptions for 97 yards and two scores and rushed for 43 yards and Shane Rosenthal had 11 catches for 130 yards and a TD.

Rhys Kelly caught a 3-yard scoring pass and Noah McCarthy rushed for 45 yards and one score on 11 carries.

Moorpark (4-2, 1-1), which won just one game a season ago, wouldn't go away.

Connor Smith completed 21 of 40 throws for 438 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

Cooper Cronquist had six catches for 151 yards along with a blocked punt and Cesar Saso had nine receptions for 166 yards and three scores.

"Kids played amazing and tough," said Moorpark head coach Ryan Huisenga. "Very proud of them."

Moorpark will host Royal this Friday. Newbury Park will play at Agoura.

OAK PARK 27, AGOURA 0

Kadyn Parr completed 12 of 14 pass attempts for 158 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 84 yards and Rowan Heidt rushed for 92 yards on 19 carries, caught seven passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns and added a sack on defense as the host Eagles won the Kanan Bowl matchup.

Oak Park (5-2, 1-2 in the Canyon League) snapped a two-game losing streak to its rival.

Hayden Lynch caught three passes for 62 yards and one touchdown and Landon Holmes had an interception and receiving touchdown. Jaden Mosley had five tackles and two sacks and Adrian Szabo had 2.5 sacks.

Standout quarterback Ty Dieffenbach, who is committed to UNLV returned to the Agoura lineup for the first time since injuring his knee in the second game of the season against Ventura on Aug. 27.

Oak Park takes a bye week. Agoura (1-4, 0-2) will host Newbury Park this Friday night.

THOUSAND OAKS 41, ROYAL 6

Travis Endicott completed 7 of 15 pass attempts for 195 yards and three touchdowns and Chase Martin rushed for 83 yards and one TD on five carries, caught one pass for a 41-yard score and notched 13 tackles and a sack as the Lancers remain undefeated with a Canyon League win on the road.

Andrew Simon-Lacombe finished with three catches for 99 yards and two score, Dane Wilson had six tackles, including two for losses, and Blake Lauritzen had four tackles and one sack. Brolin Harrah and Camden Hill rushed for touchdowns. Silas Kemp and Sam Shapiro had interceptions.

Thousand Oaks (6-0, 3-0) will host Camarillo this Friday in a matchup that may decide the Canyon League championship. Royal (3-4, 0-3) will travel to Moorpark.

OAKS CHRISTIAN 29, CALABASAS 16

Johnny Thompson rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries and Nate Bennett went 16 of 25 for 126 yards and one TD as the Lions opened Marmonte League play with the solid win at home.

Isiah Green came up with two interceptions and Aiden Flintoft booted home a 50-yard field goal.

Oaks Christian improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league and will take on host Bishop Diego this Friday. Calabasas (4-2, 0-1) will travel to Simi Valley.

PACIFICA 72, CHANNEL ISLANDS 0

Tagg Harrison and Dominic Duran combined to throw for five touchdowns and DayDay Aupiu returned an interception 108 yards for a touchdown as the first-place Tritons (6-1) improved to 5-0 in Channel League play.

Harrison completed 5 of 7 passes for 133 yards and three TDs. Dominic Duran completed 5 of 7 passes for 122 yards and two TDs.

Tommy Alfaro caught two passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns, Josh Joyner ran for a TD and caught a TD pass, Rahshem Coleman ran for a TD, and Savion Taylor and Philip Kim caught TD passes for the visiting Tritons.

The pick-6 was the third of the season and the second for longer than 100 yards for Aupiu.

Pacifica has a bye week before hosting Rio Mesa on Oct. 14. Channel Islands (0-6, 0-4) plays at Santa Barbara this Friday.

VENTURA 28, SAN MARCOS 21

The Cougars turned to Logan Scarlett for a midseason boost.

Making his first varsity start, the junior quarterback completed 20 of 28 passes for 274 yards and two TDs and managed a game-winning drive in the final minutes for host Ventura (4-3, 3-2).

“He performed pretty well for his first time, that’s for sure,” Ventura coach Tim Garcia said. “It was a spark in the right direction.”

Esteban De Santiago rushed for 103 yards and two TDs on 12 carries, including the game-winning TD with two minutes to play.

“San Marcos milked the clock offensively and put together some decent drives that kept their offense on the field,” Garcia said.

Leading 14-7 at the half, Ventura pushed the lead to 21-7 on Scarlett’s 30-yard TD pass to Makana Arndt.

Arndt finished with six catches for 115 yards and two TDs.

Defensively, Nick Thomas had an interception and Giovani Caballero recovered a fumble forced by Mylan Walker.

Ventura plays at rival Buena this Friday.

OXNARD 48, DOS PUEBLOS 7

Poni Maria completed 17 of 19 passes for 264 yards and four TDs as the Yellowjackets halted their three-game losing streak with a win in Goleta.

Elijah Aragon caught eight passes for 170 and three touchdowns for Oxnard (3-3, 1-3).

“He was a man amongst boys,” Oxnard coach Jaime Moreno said of his senior receiver.

Elijah Davis caught six passes for a 70 yards and ran for a 3-yard TD, Isaiah Dillon caught a 9-yard TD pass, and Diego Velasco rushed for 147 yards and a TD on 12 carries.

Oxnard visits Rio Mesa this Friday.

CAMARILLO 41, EL TORO 13

Brody Meyers threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns and Nathaniel Madigral rushed for 95 yards as the Scorpions won the nonleague game on the road.

Griffin Addison hauled in eight receptions for 115 yards and one touchdown and Brandon Contreras had eight catches for 91 yards and a score.

Robert Trey Valles racked up 10 tackles, Ryan Johnson had seven tackles and one sack, and Reese Winchester had an interception.

Camarillo (5-1, 2-0) returns to Canyon League this Friday with a trip to unbeaten Thousand Oaks.

SANTA PAULA 42, CARPINTERIA 14

Allen Macias ran for 229 yards and three TDs on 30 carries as the host Cardinals rolled in their Citrus Coast League opener.

“Allen has emerged as our No. 1 running back,” Santa Paula coach Mike Montoya said. “Our offensive line is playing a lot better in recent weeks.”

Quarterback Marcus Castaneda completed 11 of 18 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns, both to senior Bryce Zavala, and also ran for a TD.

Santa Paula (5-2, 1-0) hosts Hueneme in a pivotal league showdown this week.

HUENEME 41, NORDHOFF 7 (Thursday)

Josiah Sanchez completed 10 of 13 passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns as Hueneme routed host Nordhoff in the Citrus Coast League opener for both teams Thursday night in Ojai.

Aiden Avita ran for 94 yards and a TD on three carries and Rob Maria also ran for a touchdown for the Vikings (2-5, 1-0).

Robert Barrera caught three passes for 89 yards and two TDs and Ezra Juarez caught two passes for 56 yards and a TD.

Austin Wheatley threw a 60-yard scoring strike to Oney Singh for Nordhoff (0-7, 0-1).

Sol McGarey added 61 yards rushing on 18 carries and Corbyn Mitrany had an interception on defense for the Rangers.

Hueneme plays at Santa Paula this Friday. Nordhoff travels to Fillmore.
