Week 8 football roundup: Dover snaps streak; Garaway, Sandy Valley win IVC contests

Dover 28, Boardman 10

BOARDMAN — JJ Barton rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown, and Ben Hamm added one score on the ground and one through the air as the Crimson Tornadoes (5-3) earned an impressive road victory and snapped their three-game losing streak.

Hamm's 1-yard run put Dover ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. The Spartans (4-4) tied the score on a 38-yard pass from Tomas Andujar to Kejuahn Robinson later in the period.

The Tornadoes took the lead for good in the second period on a 1-yard score by Daylyn Clark. Dover led 14-10 at halftime after the Spartans converted a 25-yard field goal.

Barton's 62-yard scoring run lifted Dover to a 21-10 lead in the third period, then Hamm's 15-yard scoring strike to Matt Gigax in the fourth quarter completed the scoring.

The Tornadoes rushed for 302 yards on 39 carries and Hamm completed both of his pass attempts for 26 yards.

Andujar led Boardman with 61 yards rushing and he was 9-for-16 through the air for 105 yards. Robinson had four catches on the night for 66 yards.

Garaway 49, Tusky Valley 0

ZOARVILLE – The unbeaten Pirates (8-0, 3-0) held Tusky Valley to 48 total yards, including just 2 yards rushing, in an IVC South game.

Garaway jumped out to a 35-0 lead in the first quarter as Logan Yoder rushed for two scores and passed for two. Dillon Soehnlen found the end zone twice, once each by rushing and receiving. Brady Roden also scored two times, a 52-yard reception from Yoder and a second-half interception return.

Soehnlen led the Pirates with 100 yards on 12 carries, while Alexander Roden caught three passes for 65 yards. Ty Winters also had an interception.

Cole Clements completed 9-of-17 passes for 42 yards. Leading receiver Beau Wolf was held to 10 yards on three catches for Tusky Valley (1-7, 0-3).

Sandy Valley 29, Claymont 26

URICHSVILLE – Chad Davis rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries, and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:17 remaining, to lead the Cardinals (3-5, 1-2 IVC) to a comeback road victory in the IVC.

Davis scored all three times in the final 22 minutes after the host Mustangs (3-5, 1-2) built a 19-0 lead. The go-ahead score finished a 63-yard, four-play drive that took less than a minute. Quarterback Drew Graybill hit Chapin Greer for a 43-yard pass to give Sandy Valley a first down at the Claymont 18. Davis scored on the next play.

The Cardinals then stopped Claymont on downs with 20 seconds to go and ran out the clock.

Graybill completed 19-of-24 passes for 127 yards. Jason Morris caught seven passes for 28 yards. Graybill also scored a rushing touchdown.

Luke Williams and Jack Murphy had interceptions for the Sandy Valley defense.

For Claymont, quarterback Graydon Mooneyham completed 10 of 22 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. AJ Bowsher led the ground game for the Mustangs with 28 carries for 190 yards and a score. Brody Moreland (4 catches for 74 yards), Devin Whitman and Isaac Birney caught scoring passes.

Defensively, Birney and Nolan McMorrow had interceptions.

Edison Local 49, Harrison Central 14

RICHMOND – The Huskies (4-4, 1-3 Buckeye 8) led 14-6 midway through the first quarter before the host Wildcats (8-0, 2-0) took control.

Harrison Central was limited to 65 total yards. Hayden Cassidy completed a 7-yard scoring pass to Parker Hutton and Mykel Quito rushed for a 2-yard score to give the Huskies a 14-6 lead with 5:43 remaining in the first quarter.

Edison, though, asserted its running game, finishing with 446 yards on 51 attempts. Talan McClurg led the way with 273 yards on 24 carries with two touchdowns.

East Canton 47, Central Catholic 14

Brennan Betz accounted for 272 total yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead East Canton over Central Catholic in an IVC North contest.

Betz completed 17-of-27 passes for 192 yards and one score, and he rushed eight times for 80 yards and another TD.

Dillon Anderson had 58 yards rushing and three TDs for the Hornets (4-4, 2-1 IVC). Dominic Reda led the receivers with 56 yards on two catches, and Toby Schrader added six receptions for 45 yards. Ben Gallagher (4-41) had the receiving touchdown.

Thayne Mahaffey had 110 yards on 18 carries and scored both Central Catholic (2-6, 0-3) touchdowns.

Marlington 31, Minerva 0

MINERVA – Beau Himmelheber caught two scoring passes and ran for a third touchdown to lead Marlington (1-7, 1-2 Eastern Buckeye Conference) past Minerva.

Bryson McCord was 9-of-25 through the air, but for 173 yards and two TDs. Brady Keller also caught a scoring pass and David Hoebeke kicked a field goal.

Minerva (0-7, 0-3) was led by Devon Patterson, who rushed 15 times for 38 yards. Quarterback Hunter Dietrich completed 6-of-15 passes for 62 yards.

Buckeye Trail 43, Strasburg 6

LORE CITY – The Warriors (2-6, 2-1 IVC North) rushed for 348 yards and forced three Strasburg turnovers to win at home.

Buckeye Trail used 10 running backs; no one had more than eight carries. Charlie Parry (6-73) scored two touchdowns while Travis Dodd (2-84) and Nick Neuhart (8-49) had one apiece. Neuhart also completed 4-of-11 passes for 67 yards and a TD, to Koen Egan (3-61).

Parker Edwards caught four passes for 95 yards and a touchdown to lead the Tigers (0-8, 0-3).
