Your week in Columbus: News to help you navigate life

Dear Subscriber,

(Note: Because of a technical error, yesterday’s newsletter had an outdated introduction on it. Here is what we meant to send you.)

It was another big news week in Columbus, from culture wars at the Statehouse to grief in the local Muslim community as it faces its first Ramadan without a beloved imam. Here's what we've been chasing:

The week opened with news that Ohio House Republicans introduced HB 616, which would prevent schools from addressing sexual orientation, gender identity and "divisive concepts" such as critical race theory for students in kindergarten through third grade. Ohio's version of the Florida "Don't Say Gay" law was met with alarm by educational leaders and LGBTQ advocates, writers Michael Lee and Megan Henry report.

Mulch season is upon us, and there's more to know about this basic lawn and garden task than you might guess. Do you choose organic or synthetic? How much should you put down? And did you know the price of straw has recently risen quicker than the cost of gasoline?

Ohio State starting quarterback C.J. Stroud's explosive debut has him under the bright lights, but he's trying stay humble and focus on continuous improvement. He's also sharing that spotlight: "Really my job is to make everybody around me better," he told The Dispatch's Joey Kaufman this week.

The holy month of Ramadan for the Columbus Muslim community is shadowed by the absence of Imam Mohamed Hassan Adam, who was found shot to death in December. His prolific outreach to those in need is something fellow spiritual leaders are striving to keep going, writer Danae King shares this week.

And, a century later, the Prohibition party is still going. For foodies who like a good mystery, restaurant reporter Taijuan Moorman rounded up five Columbus not-so-secret speakeasies worth visiting.

Enjoy the stories—we wrote them with you in mind. Thank you for being a loyal subscriber.
