This week at Harbor Park: Norfolk Tides return home for two weeks, but top prospect departed for the majors
A look at the Norfolk Tides as they return home Tuesday to begin a six-game homestand against the Gwinnett Stripers, the top affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The Tides are home for two weeks, with a six-game homestand against Jacksonville beginning May 31.
Norfolk’s record: 20-22, tied for fifth in IL East.
New in town: Pitchers Logan Gillaspie and Nick Vespi joined the Tides this weekend, but the biggest transaction was the departure of catcher Adley Rutschman. Rated the No. 2 prospect in baseball by MLB.com, Rutschman was called up by the Baltimore Orioes on Saturday after playing only 12 games this season with Norfolk.
In the Gwinnett dugout: Delino DeShields, a 29-year-old outfielder, is a former No. 1 draft pick (No. 3 overall by Texas in 2014) and the son of a former major leaguer of the same name (they don’t share the same middle name). The younger DeShields has logged more than 1,800 major league at-bats and is batting .272 this season.
