Week in Review: Lake Gibson girls hoops win 4th straight plus more basketball, soccer results

Girls Basketball

Lake Gibson 83, Viera 67

Highlights: Lake Gibson has won all four games since the holidays break, including three this week, to surge to .500 at 8-8. In Saturday's game at the Dr. MLK Shootout against Viera (16-4), Taniya Brown led Lake Gibson with 31 points as she hit four 3-pointers. Brown started hot with nine points in the first quarter then added 12 points in the second quarter as Lake Gibson began pulling away by taking a 48-27 lead. Jamila Ray scored 21 points, Samari Wilson scored nine points, and Dee Arrington added eight points. Earlier in the week, Lake Gibson defeated Cocoa 58-35 on Friday and began the week with a 50-39 victory over DME Academy. No stats from either game were provided.

DME 51, McKeel 19

Highlights: Junior Nicaria McHellon (was named MVP for McKeel. She had seven points, seven rebounds, and one steal.

Mulberry 61, McKeel 38

Highlights: Sophomore Lorianys Castanon Cruz scored 38 points to lead Mulberry over McKeel. She made five 3-pointers. Mikayla Ware added 11 points. For McKeel, Nicana McHellan scored 10 points, and Sydney Jackson scored nine points.

Mulberry 65, ECA 29

Highlights: Lorianys Castanon Cruz scored 32 points, and Mikayal Ware scored 17 points to lead Mulberry.

Mulberry 40, Winthrop College Prep 28

Highlights: Lorianys Castanon Cruz scored 26 points, and Mikayla ware added 10 points to lead Mulberry.

Discovery 49, Auburnale 37

Highlights: Monajah Ford scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Nerline Metellus added six points and 11 rebounds to lead Discovery.

George Jenkins 55, Bartow 49 (OT)

Highlights: In a closely contested match that went into overtime, the Eagles made four free throws in a row to pull out the win and improve to 13–4. George Jenkins was led by Nellie Jackson with 20 points, Morgan Walsh with 13 points, Taylor Gibson with 12 points and Mary Kate Benham with eight points. Bartow was led by Dariasia Pitts with 17 points.

Winter Haven wins 3 of 4

Highlights: The Blue Devils beat Plant City, 57-4, Tampa Catholic 62-30 before seeing their late rally come up short in a 68-65 loss to Cardinal Mooney on Friday. Winter Haven closed out the week with an 82-53 victory over Clearwater in the MLK Shootout at Lakewood. Winter Haven did not provide stats from any of the four games.

Boys Basketball

Lakeland 81, George Jenkins 74

Highlights: Javariew Burton scored 17 points, and Kaumarri McKinley and Kale Elmhorst each scored 15 points to lead the short-handed Dreadnaughts, who were without leading scorer Rolijah Hardy. RJ Kelly added 10 points. Lakeland 36-35 at halftime, and Jenkins stayed close the rest of the game. Antonio Wright Jr. scored 30 points to lead Jenkins. Jaquan Cross scored 16 points, and Sincere Burroughs added nine points.

George Jenkins 60, Lake Wales 38

Highlights: Jaquan Cross scored 26 points and Antonio Wright Jr. scored 15 points to lead George Jenkins. R Senior led Lake Wales with 10 points.

Winter Haven 75, Bartow 48

Highlights: Jamie Phillips Jr. scored 21 points with four rebounds four assists and five steals to lead Winter Haven. Kjei Parker scored 19 points, and Dylan James added 18 points, eight rebounds and two steals and three blocks. Isaac Celiscar managed just three points but pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. For Bartow, Nate Smathers led with 10 points, and EJ Horton added eight points and six rebounds.

IMG Blue 73, Haines City 54

Highlights: Jesse Nimmo led Haines City with 21 points, and Manny Taylor added 15 points. Lucson Jean scored 12 points. Haines City led, 32-30 at halftime but managed just 22 points in the second half, including just nine points in the fourth quarter.

Winter Haven 52, Mainland 49

Highlights: Kjei Parker scored 25 points and added four steals, Dylan James scored 11 points with six rebounds, and Jamie Phillips Jr. cored 10 points with six rebounds, four assist sand two steals.

Bartow 76, Auburndale 73

Highlights: Jayson Williams scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Bartow. EJ Horton scored 13 points with five rebounds and five assists, and Daniel Thompson added 11 points. Trailing, 33-31 at halftime, Bartow outscored Auburndale, 23-14, in the third quarter to take a 54-45 lead then held on for the three-point win. Nehemiah Turner scored 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, and Jameson Young added 17 points. Kervin Knaggs scored 14 points, and Carter Cuff added 13.

Victory Christian 84, Tampa Catholic 81

Highlights: LJ Cason scored 34 points and added with rebound, six assist, and Mike Andino scored 17 points with four rebounds to lead the Storm. Tucker Fox had 11 points with five rebounds, and Jordan Lainer added eight points with six rebounds and one block.

Jordan Christian 76, Star Academy 65

Highlights: JCP secured the No. 1 seed in the FIHSAA region 3 tournament with a victory over Star Academy. The Seahawks were led by Zay Mosley with 30 points, 17 rebounds and five assists. William Reyes added 12 points, and six rebounds, and Deangelo Parker had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Discovery 93, Liberty 61

Highlights: Angel Canuelas set a school record with 52 points to lead the Spartans. He also had11 rebounds and shot 15-of-17 from the field and 5-of-10 from the 3-point line. The Spartans have now won five of their last six games.

Santa Fe Catholic 50, SLAM Tampa 49

Highlights: After trailing 16-5 to the end the first quarter Santa Fe Catholic, responded in the second quarter by outscoring SLAM 22-5. The Hawks were led by sophomore Tate Darner with 16 points and senior Zeq Munoz with 15 points. Junior Hudson Dykhuizen was a steady force all night long with 12 points and 6 rebounds.

Santa Fe Catholic 63, Kathleen 26

Highlights: Santa Fe Catholic won with a great team defensive effort. Junior Hudson Dykhuizen led the Hawks with 17 points (6-for-6 FG, 5-for-5 FT) and eight rebounds. Senior Zeq Munoz scored 12 points and Sophomore Tate Darner scored 10 points.

Ridge Community 65, St. Cloud 48

Highlights: Jason Jack scored 26 points, and Adrian Rogers scored 15 points to lead Ridge Community. The Bolts led 33-26 at halftime and kept pulling away in the second half.

Davenport 57, Ridge Community 46

Highlights: Chase-Ragin-Moore had 20 points and three steals, and Edward Rodgers had 15 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead Davenport.

Winter Haven 5, Auburndale 2

Highlights: Winter Haven scored three goals in less than in about eight minutes just before the first-half water break to take a 3-0 lead. Auburndale scored twice in the second half to make it a one-goal game, missing chances to tie, but Winter Haven scored twice late to pull away. MacAlister Kranzler Ratcliffe scored two goals with three assists to lead Winter Haven. Conner Meyer had one goal and one assist, and Jonathan Lamonica and Anthony Castro scored one goal. For Auburnfdale, Daniel Whiteside scored one goal and assisted on Davian Mata's goal. Rone Jasmin assisted on Whiteside's goal.

Winter Haven 3, Discovery 0

Highlights: The Blue Devils followed up its victory over Auburndale by shutting out Discovery. Anthony Castro had one goal and two assists to lead Winter Haven, and MacAlister Kranzler Ratcliffe and Fahad Adem each added a goal. Conner Meyer had an assists.

Auburndale 2, Mulberry 0

Highlights: Prior to its loss to Winter Haven, Auburndale defeated Mulberry. Davian Mata and Drake Sadler scored for Auburndale. The Bloodhounds ended the week with a 5-0 win over George Jenkins.

McKeel 1, Lake Gibson 0

Highlights: Alejandro Araque scored the only goal of the match. McKeel's Nate Miller had three saves, and Lake Gibson's Dalton Houser had five saves.

McKeel 1, Lakeland Christian 0

Highlights: Senior Calvin Steele lead the Wildcats with the only goal of the match. Nate Miller in the goal had the shutout with four saves.

Girls Soccer

Lakeland 3, Winter Haven 1

Highlights: Lakeland defeated rival Winter Haven 3-1. Sophomore Naomi Garner had two huge goals from midfield. Junior Bree Horvatin scored on a free kick from 40 yards out. The lone assist by Sophomore Leighton Wyatt. Senior Reese Hughes and Sophomore Ryleigh Evans help locked down the midfield and Lakeland’s defenders (Jillian Sebree, Bree Horvatin, Stella Johnson, Val Bautista and Ellery Pierce) were able to neutralize Winter Haven’s attack.

Auburndale 8, Fort Meade 0

Highlights: Peyton Battilla and McKenzie each scored three goals to lead the Bloodhounds over the Miners. Adriene Cardona-Colon and McKenzie Cinquantie also scored one goal.

Lake Gibson 2, Lake Wales 1

Highlights: Kierra Hoiler scored one goal and added an assist, and Sydney Hoiler also scored for the Braves. Savannah Davis had 15 saves.

Bartow 1, Lake Gibson 0

Highlights: Savannah Davis had 12 saves for Lake Gibson.

Lake Gibson 2, George Jenkins 2Highlights Sydney Hoiler and Riley Patterson each scored a goal for Lake Gibson, and Madison Fletcher had one assist. Savannah Davis had seven saves.

Lakeland Christian 6, Windermere 0

Highlights: Maddie Lopez, Carly Sabat and Kaelyn Diaz each had a goal and an assist to lead the Vikings. Ella Williams, Mari Carr and Adriene Diaz also scored one goal each, and Destinee Carroll, Kyleigh Coleman and Ori Gotauco each had an assist.

Cambridge 1, Victory Christian 0

Highlights: The Storm soccer team lost a tough close decision to No. 10-ranked Cambridge Christian. Alaina Fountain had a brilliant game in goal with athletic saves and booming punts. Amber Choquette’s marking inside the box prevented multiple goals, and Kaylie Whittenton, Ava Schrock and Karen Romero’s outside defense kept the Lancers off the mark for almost the match.

Davenport 8, Kathleen 3

Highlights: On senior night, Angie Sciacca (4), Gianna Stathakis (3), and Casey McNulty (1) all scored goals.
