This weekend in Anchorage: Flannel Fest brings 90s vibes and the Great Alaska Duck Race raises funds
Sep. 9—Fall is here and so are some of our favorite autumnal activities. The Alaska Pioneer Fruit Growers Association is hosting an apple tasting to keep us in the spirit of the season. And what would fall be without flannel? This weekend's Flannel Fest features some of the best 90s music from the Pacific Northwest.
Under the Tree Music Scene: 7 p.m. Friday, Hilltop Ski Area, 7015 Abbott Rd.
The final installment of the summer music series at Hilltop features rockin' roots band Highway 9. Finn's will be open serving food and drinks.
Ken Peltier Band: 10 p.m. Friday, Koot's, 2435 Spenard Rd.
Alaska's most popular country band hits the stage Friday at Koot's for a free show. The KPB has played some of the biggest venues in the state, from the Alaska State Fair to Arctic Man.
Geek Swap Meet: Noon Saturday, Bosco's, 2301 Spenard Rd.
This swap meet is open to people of all interests and is free to attend. There is room for 13 booths so space is limited for fans of cards, games and comics.
Great Alaska Duck Race
The Great Alaska Duck Race: 11 a.m. Saturday, King's Landing at Ship Creek
The Great Alaska Duck Race is a major fundraising event for youth sports, education and local community organizations. Watch the ducks race from the Ship Creek overlook to the Bait Shack but don't worry winners don't need to be present to win. There are $10 tickets with a $5,000 grand prize and $20 tickets with a $10,000 top prize.
AK Flannel Fest: 3 p.m. Saturday, Matanuska Brewing, 11901 Old Glenn Hwy., Eagle River
You'll get all the plaid you can handle at this 90s Music Festival. Nevermind, the Nirvana tribute band from Seattle headlines the bill that includes Nothing Shocking, a Jane's Addiction tribute band. Locals Danger Money will also be performing at the fest, which also features ax throwing, food and beer. Tickets are $45.
Alaska apple tasting: 1 p.m. Sunday, Begich Middle School, 7440 Creekside Center Dr.
The Alaska Pioneer Fruit Growers Association (APFGA) is hosting this event. This is an opportunity to sample the many apple varieties grown locally and discover the ones that you want to consider growing.
Women of Rock: 7 p.m. Sunday, Koot's, 2435 Spenard Rd.
Anchorage frontwomen are set to perform rock hits from artists like Prince, Bon Jovi, No Doubt, Heart, Styx and Evanescence. Featuring performers Regina Catherine Welch, Kathryn Strock, Lisa Willis and others. Tickets are $25.
