This weekend in Anchorage: Pink Martini returns, Limp Bizkit rolls into town and the annual Ship Creek cleanup
May 11—Some big names and old favorites will take the stage in Anchorage this weekend. Rap-rock revolutionaries Limp Bizkit will perform at the Alaska Airlines Center, and Pink Martini returns. Also, the annual Ship Creek cleanup means fishing season is right around the corner. Here's a sampling of what's happening in Anchorage this weekend.
Carnival of the Animals: 6 p.m. Friday, Discovery Theatre, 621 W. Sixth Ave.
Anchorage Classical Ballet Academy's production of Carnival of the Animals will showcase much of what the troupe has learned over the past season. The musical suite contains 14 movements, each represented by an animal. Tickets start at $32.75.
Opaque Etymologies: Fifteen Moons: 6:30 pm. Friday, Out North Theater, 411 D St.
Local artist Indra Arriaga Delgado launches her new book with an immersive experience showcasing the collection of intaglio prints titled "Opaque Etymologies" and the recording of selected poems in English, Spanish and Nahuatl in this event. It's free to the public.
Annual Ship Creek Spring Cleanup: 11 a.m. Saturday, The Bait Shack, 212 W. Whitney Road
The 11th annual Ship Creek Cleanup is expected to draw more than 100 people to help preserve the area and prepare it for fishing season. Matson is supplying trash grabbers and wheelbarrows. Volunteers are asked to dress in layers and bring rain gear, rubber boots or waders, latex or nitrile gloves, and safety vests. There will be giveaways after the event.

Limp Bizkit: 7 p.m. Saturday, Alaska Airlines Center, 3550 Providence Drive
Limp Bizkit gained national notoriety in the 1990s with a rap-rock hybrid led by frontman Fred Durst. The band had hits like "Nookie" and garnered both fans and award nominations. Tickets range from $89-$129. For those who can't get enough Durst, there's another opportunity with Limp Bizkit Eve featuring Durst and DJ Lethal with local support from Tayy Tarantino.
Pink Martini featuring China Forbes: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Atwood Concert Hall, 621 W. Sixth Ave.
Pink Martini bandleader/pianist Thomas Lauderdale calls the group "a rollicking, around-the-world musical adventure." The band spans countries and eras, hitting it big with the single "Sympathique" more than 20 years ago. Since then they've made multiple trips to Anchorage, drawing crowds with each performance. Tickets start at $37.25.
Anchorage Civic Orchestra Spring Concert: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sydney Laurence Theatre, 621 W. Sixth Ave.
The Anchorage Civic Orchestra will perform Weber's "Der Freischütz" Overture and Hindemith's "Mathis der Maler" Symphony. The evening will also feature Lillian Yang, who took first place in the concerto competition. She will play the first movement of Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 2 and the runner-up Nate Gartland will also perform. Tickets start at $23.50.
Duplessy & The Violins of the World: 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Discovery Theatre, 621 W. Sixth Ave.
The Anchorage Concert Association presents The Violins of the World, which blends Eastern and Western musical traditions with elements of blues, Celtic and even Mongolian soundscapes. French Gypsy guitarist Mathias Duplessy formed the group. Tickets start at $44, and the UAA Concert Board is offering discounted tickets for UAA students.
