This weekend in Anchorage: A plethora of musical options plus a full slate of First Friday events

Nov. 4—Winter has officially landed in Anchorage. And with its arrival are a number of musical options this weekend, from national acts like The Elovaters and The Suffers to local talent. The Anchorage Civic Orchestra performs its fall concert and The Hall Monitors of West High perform a show to dedicated to Jim-related songs.

The Elovaters: 7 p.m. Saturday, Williwaw Social, 609 F St.

This reggae group is one of the fastest rising in the genre and has toured with Ziggy Marley among others. Locals H3 will open and tickets for the show are $35-40.

Holiday Food & Gift Festival: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Dena'ina Center, 600 W. 7th Ave.

This two-day event features unique gifts, handmade arts and crafts, clothing, jewelry, bath products, home decor and gourmet food. Admission is free.

JimFest with The Hall Monitors: 8 p.m. Saturday, Downtown Bearpaw Bar & Grill, 415 E St.

This group of West High teachers normally plays in the halls during lunchtime. This weekend they will be playing all sorts of Jim-related songs, from Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Buffett and others.

The Suffers at The PAC: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Alaska Center for the Peforming Arts, 621 W. 6th Ave.

This Houston band merges reggae, jazz, salsa, rock, hip-hop and funk. The band has played the Newport Folk Festival and NPR's Tiny Desk Concert Series. Tickets for this concert are $44.50 but the UAA Concert Board is offering students tickets for just $20.

Anchorage Civic Orchestra: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sydney Laurence Theatre

The ACO's fall concert includes performances of Schubert's "Rosamunde Overture," Schumann's "4th Symphony" and a Piazzolla concerto. Local musicians Armin Abdihodzic, guitar, and Karl Pasch, clarinet, are featured. Tickets are $23.50 with senior and youth prices as well.
