This weekend in Anchorage: Rosanne Cash, Parlor in the Round and a Native art market
Mar. 16—There is plenty going on in Anchorage this weekend, with St. Patrick's Day festivities and the 1A/2A high school state basketball tournament. But there are other events, including a concert by country legend Rosanne Cash and Parlor in the Round, which showcases local songwriters and guests.
Alaska Native Art Market: 8 a.m. Friday/Saturday, Alaska Airlines Center, 3550 Providence Drive
The Alaska Native Heritage Center is hosting the inaugural Alaska Native Artist Market at the 1A/2A state basketball tournament. Located on the third floor of the Alaska Airlines Center, the market "showcases the diverse artistic talents of Alaska Native cultures from each region of Alaska."
Comedian Steven Briggs: 7 p.m./9 p.m. Saturday, Koot's, 2435 Spenard Road
Steven Briggs has a comedy style that's been described as "unique, high-energy" with plenty of funny anecdotes and characters. He's appeared on Netflix, MTV, Hulu, TruTV and HBO. Tickets for the show are $20.
Parlor in the Round: 8 p.m. Saturday, Bear Tooth Theatrepub, 1230 W. 27th Ave.
Parlor in the Round is in its eighth season, bringing together Alaska's best local songwriters and guests with an emphasis on improvisation and experimentation. This edition features Kyshona, Daniel Firmin and Rosie Rush. Tickets are $25.
Rosanne Cash: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Atwood Concert Hall, 621 W. Sixth Ave.
One of the most accomplished artists in country music history, Cash takes the stage in Anchorage on Friday. She's produced 21 top-40 hits, has released 15 albums and has won four Grammys. Tickets start at $44.
The Great Leap: 7:30 p.m. Friday/Saturday, 4 p.m. Sunday, UAA Fine Arts Building, 3700 Alumni Drive
Presented by Perseverance Theatre and UAA Department of Theatre and Dance, this play follows an American college basketball team traveling to Beijing for a "friendship" game in the late 1980s. On the American team, Manford Lum tries to navigate China after the cultural revolution and his own identity. Tickets are $35 on Sunday and $50 for the Friday and Saturday shows.
