Port City Life Newsletter: Somber and celebratory as Wilmington marks 1898, Veterans Day

Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter John Staton.

It's a weekend both somber and celebratory, as we commemorate the 125th anniversary of Wilmington's 1898 coup and massacre while also honoring those who have served the United States as we mark Veterans Day.

Plus, we've got our usual collection of cool events, food news and more. Let's get started.

Weekend weather outlook

Not ideal. Friday should be nice enough, cloudy and warmish, but a chilly rain will begin moving in on Saturday, and Sunday looks like it could be a complete wash. Better luck next weekend!

Despite the expected nasty weather, there's plenty to do (and learn) this weekend, and the slate is heavy with events commemorating the 125th anniversary of Wilmington's 1898 coup and massacre.

There's also a major new exhibit, "Monument," opening at the Cameron Art Museum; a Veterans Day parade; some really intriguing plays at UNCW ("Dracula") and CFCC ("John Proctor is the Villain," a modern-day reckoning with "The Crucible"); lots of music (don't miss Suck Fest, you'll thank me later); and some big names touring through the area ("This American Life's" Ira Glass at Kenan Auditorium).

Musician, producer and Wilmington native L'Orange recently started his own record label, Old Soul Music.

Having toured Europe multiple times with his hip-hop duo, Marlowe, and with nearly a quarter-million listeners for his music on Spotify each month, the Wilmington producer known as L'Orange, now based in Asheville, has already gotten his music on the world stage. This past summer, he decided to take things to the next level by launching his own record label, Old Soul Music.

News you can use

Good news for Wilmington's film industry, as the actors' strike appears to have been settled, clearing the way for film and TV productions to return, perhaps before the end of the year. One local production that won't be returning, unfortunately, is the "Untitled Josh and Lauren Project," produced by Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay and starring Josh Jackson and Lauren Ridloff.
