Weekend concerts range from harp music to classic rock at local venues, tickets on sale

Care about concerts and crafts? The Herald-Times has got you covered this weekend.

Several performances from timeless classics to new favorites will be hosted late this week and early next for those in the mood for some live music. Harpists and jazz musicians plan to light up Bloomington while Three Dog Night is set to play in nearby Brown County.

This week's Gallery Walk Bloomington has garnered some buzz as residents can take a first look at the new works and artists featured in several galleries across town.

While a craft fair in Spring Mill may be worth the drive, residents also can find local craft shows and holiday bazaars.

Free IU women's basketball game on Friday

Fans can watch a basketball game at Assembly Hall for one of the first times since the pandemic on Friday. At 7 p.m., Indiana University will play against University of Indianapolis in women's basketball. Admission will be free in support of ALS Awareness Night. Attendees are encouraged to wear red clothing to support the cause.

Friends of Lake Monroe Gallery Exhibit

To celebrates its fifth anniversary, Friends of Lake Monroe will host a water-themed exhibit at the Brick Room Gallery, 107 N. College Ave. The show, titled "The Art of Water," will feature oil paintings and photography by local artists. The exhibit will premiere Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and will continue to be open at that time every Friday in November.

The gallery exhibit will feature oil paintings from Dawn Adams, a professional artist with a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Indiana University's Bloomington campus. According to a release, Dawn chose water as a source of inspiration because of its versatility and soothing imagery.

Jeff Danielson, former owner of Runcible Spoon, and Kriste Lindberg, a stormwater education specialist with the city of Bloomington, will display their nature photos in the exhibit as well.

Harp Concert at First United Methodist Church on Friday

On Friday, renowned harpists and guest performers will play a benefit concert at the First United Methodist Church, 219 E. Fourth St. Funds raised will go toward the USA International Harp Competition, an independent performance competition at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music that recognizes young harpists worldwide.

Adjunct IU faculty member Fan-Fen Tai will perform alongside other harpists Sophie Thorpe and Ariel Schwartz. Tai is a distinguished harpist, having won the Laureate Prize at the First Vera Dulova International Harp Competition in Moscow, the top prize and “People’s Choice” of the Travel Grant Competition from Indiana University, first prize of Taipei Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, and first prize at The First Taiwan Harp Competition.

Guest artists Deepa Johnny, a mezzo-soprano singer, and Charles Prestinari, an organist, will perform as well. The artists will play a wide range of selections from composers throughout the decades.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for students and available at https://usaihc.org/ in advance or at the door on the night of the show.

Masks are required, regardless of vaccination status.

Gallery Walk on Friday

Bundle up on Friday night while taking a stroll through Gallery Walk Bloomington. From 5 to 8 p.m., 10 local galleries will display new work that residents can view and at times meet the artists.

  • Karen Navarro, an Argentine-born multidisciplinary artist, will appear at Pictura Gallery, 202 S. Rogers St., to showcase "The Constructed Self" and talk about her multimedia work. Navarro will speak at 7 p.m.

  • Julianna Burrell and Sarah J. Slover will debut "New Works" at Bloomington Rentals & Realty, 213 S. Rogers St.

  • Rebecca Lowery's "Unlocking Perception: New Works" will be in By Hand Gallery, 101 W. Kirkwood Ave., Suite 109, in Fountain Square Mall.

  • Cook Center's inaugural engaged artist-in-residence, zakkiyyah najeebah dumas o’neal, will display "This Irrepressible Need to Fulfill Myself in Every Way Possible" at the Gayle Karch Cook Center in Maxwell Hall on the Indiana University campus.

  • A show of collective works by Bloomingfoods staff members, titled "Staff Art Exhibit," will be in Gallery B at Bloomingfoods, Near West, 316 W. Sixth St.

  • Spectrum Creative Group Gallery will showcase “Route 66 Revisited” by Kendall Reeves. The gallery is inside Fountain Square Mall in Suite 112.

  • The Rainbow Bakery will have a "Rainbow Lounge," which features a pop-up indoor market featuring works by Angela Frezza, Mary Shipp, Olive Bea and Avrie Allen.

  • Jessie Grubb's “Fluorescent Figures” will appear at Roses Gallery, located at the northeast corner of Fourth and Rogers streets.

  • The Venue Fine Art & Gifts, 114 S. Grant St., will premiere new works by Anna Afshar.

  • The Upland Plein Air 2021 Fall Member Exhibition will show "Sharing Gifts" at The Vault at Gallery Mortgage, 121 E. Sixth St., Suite 1.

Spring Mill Craft Fair this weekend

Take a drive out to Spring Mill State Park near Mitchell for some crafts by local artisans. The popular Craft Fair is back at Pioneer Village on Craft Fair Saturday and Sunday afternoons. All vendors will be in the village's cabins, displaying handmade items for sale.

The Craft Fair will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Visitors must have a park pass or pay the $7 entrance fee ($9 out-of-state). To enter the Craft Fair, entry for adults is $3 each; children aged 3 and younger have free admission.

History center's holiday sale this Saturday

Residents have another chance to scoop up some good deals from the Monroe County History Center's annual sale. On Saturday, the volunteers who organized the last fundraiser in June are hosting a special holiday shopping event at the garage sale warehouse.

Donated treasures of all kinds, from antiques to fine art to rugs, will be available. Unique holiday gifts that can't be found elsewhere will abound.

The sale will be 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Cook warehouse off Curry Pike at 4015 Profile Parkway on Bloomington's west side. The proceeds will go to support artifact preservation, exhibits and programs at the Monroe County History Center.

Three Dog Night in Brown County on Saturday

From 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Three Dog Night will perform at the Brown County Music Center. Between 1969 to 1975, the classic rock band scored 21 Billboard Top 40 hits, with three hitting No. 1. Their mainstream single "Joy to the World" is still making airwaves ever since it debuted in 1971.

Brown County Music Center requires attendees to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours for entry.

Jazz Concert at Blockhouse Bar next week

Jazz guitarist Zacc Harris will swing by the Blockhouse Bar at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to promote his group's new album, "Small Wonders." A contemplative look at the joys and struggles of parenting, the album has a diverse range of sounds from sweet Latin music-inspired grooves to reflective, moody ballads.

Harris is a revered and accomplished jazz musician, having been the recipient of multiple fellowships and awards including a McKnight Fellowship and Minnesota Emerging Composers Award.

The performance will be at the Blockhouse Bar, 205 S. College Ave., from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Cover charge is $10.
