Weekend crashes in Willoughby Hills, Wickliffe temporarily close highways

Aug. 29—Highways in western Lake County twice had to be closed over the weekend after serious traffic crashes.

At approximately 8:35 p.m. on Aug. 28, Willoughby Hills police responded to a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 90 eastbound near the 188 mile marker, according to a post on the department's Facebook page.

Officers arrived on scene to find a head-on collision between two vehicles in the eastbound lanes. According to Capt. Greg Leonbruno of the Willoughby Hills Police, the initial investigation showed that a Chevy Tahoe was traveling westbound on I-90 when it lost control and crossed the median into the eastbound lanes, striking a Dodge Caravan.

A tractor trailer was sideswiped as a result of the initial collision. The freeway was shut down for a short time in order to safely render aid and clear the debris field. Leonbruno said two individuals were transported to Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights.

This investigation is still on-going but alcohol does not appear to be a factor, police said.

Wickliffe Police assisted.

The crash came after Wickliffe Police had responded to a rollover crash on Route 2 westbound near the Worden Road bridge project at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 27. A Ford F350 pickup truck crashed, also affecting a Kia Sorrento, according to Det. Sgt. Jim Kulik of the Wickliffe Police Department.

Kulik also reported the truck was on all four wheels when the police arrived. One of the drivers was transported to University Hospital in Cleveland and one of the passengers was transported to Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, police said.

The westbound lanes were closed for approximately one hour.
