Weekend forecast: Expect extreme wind chill, frigid temperatures across Southern Tier

Arctic air, high winds and heavy snow squalls will begin to sweep through the Southern Tier late tonight and cold temperature and wind chills are expected to remain in the area until about noon Saturday.

Jim Brewster, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Binghamton, said the frigid air has moved across Canada, is currently in the Northern Great Plains, and is expected to hit the Southern Tier early Friday morning.

“This evening we’re looking at some heavier snow squalls,” Brewster said. “If anybody happens to be traveling during the late part of the tonight, that will be the first hazard. There may be some slippery conditions initially but then we get into the cold air filtering in tomorrow.”

Brewster said the coldest gusty wind chills and very cold temperatures will hit the Southern Tier Friday night and continue Saturday morning.

Extreme wind chill to hit Southern Tier: What to expect

A wind chill warning is in effect across much of New York from 7 a.m. Friday through noon Saturday, with dangerously cold wind chills expected as low as 35 below zero in some areas. In Binghamton, temperatures are expected to fall to around 5 degrees by 5 p.m. Friday, with wind chill values as low as -15 and winds around 17 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph.

In such conditions, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in at little as 10 minutes, according to the National Weather Service.

Brewster said the arctic air mass will move through the Southern Tier Sunday afternoon, then temperatures will begin to climb back up.

“On Tuesday and Wednesday weather should climb back into the 40 degrees,” Brewster said. “Which of course for early February is above normal, but it's not super warm. You feel kind of chilly in the 40s, but it will be a stark contrast to what we will have over the weekend.”
