Weekend freeway closures across Phoenix: Here's what to know

The Arizona Department of Transportation is back with another round of closures and restrictions on tap for highways across the Valley this weekend.

Notable closures will be seen along stretches of Interstates 10 and 17, the U.S. 60 and Loop 303 as part of ongoing freeway improvement projects.

As always, drivers are advised to allow for extra time and plan alternate routes. Additionally, drivers need to be prepared to slow down and merge safely when traveling through construction zones.

Southbound I-17 closed between Cactus Road and Northern Avenue

Details: I-17 southbound will be closed between Cactus Road and Northern Avenue for a pavement improvement project. The southbound on-ramps at Greenway and Thunderbird Roads will also be closed.

When: 8 p.m. Friday, March 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11.

Alternate Routes: ADOT suggests using Loop 101 eastbound (Pima Freeway) to southbound SR 51 as an alternate freeway route to reach downtown Phoenix. I-17 southbound drivers can also exit ahead of the closure by using southbound 19th or 35th avenues.

Northbound I-17 closed between Northern Avenue and Yorkshire Drive

Details: I-17 northbound will be closed between Northern Avenue and Yorkshire Drive (north of Union Hills Drive). The northbound on-ramps at Bethany Home Road and Glendale Avenue will also be closed.

When: 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11 to 5 a.m. Monday, March 13.

Alternate Routes: Drivers can use northbound SR 51 to westbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) to reach I-17 past the closure. Northbound drivers can exit ahead of the closure by using northbound 19th or 35th avenues.

Westbound US 60 closed between Alma School Road and McClintock Drive

Details: U.S. 60 westbound will be closed between Alma School Road and McClintock Drive for a pavement improvement project. The westbound on-ramps at Stapley, Mesa and Country Club drives will be closed. Loop 101 north and southbound ramps to westbound U.S. 60 will be closed as well.

When: 9 p.m. Friday, March 10 to 5 a.m. Monday, March 13.

Alternate Routes: Westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain or Santan Freeways) can be used as alternate freeway routes. Local traffic can detour along westbound Baseline Road or Southern Avenue.

Westbound Loop 303 closed between I-17 and Lake Pleasant Parkway

Details: Westbound Loop 303 will be closed between I-17 and Lake Pleasant Parkway for new interchange construction.

When: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 11.

Alternate Routes: Drivers can consider using westbound SR 74 to southbound Lake Pleasant Parkway to travel past the closure.

Westbound I-10 ramp closed to northbound SR 143

Details: The westbound I-10 ramp to northbound State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) will be closed for the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.

When: 10 p.m. Friday, March 10 to 4 a.m. Monday, March 13.

Alternate Routes: Eastbound Broadway Road to northbound Priest Drive and westbound University Drive can be used as detours.

Additional Broadway Curve closures/restrictions

  • Eastbound I-10 "connector ramp" between 48th Street and Broadway Road will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday, March 10 to 4 a.m. Monday, March 13.

  • Northbound 48th Street and SR 143 will be narrowed to one lane between Broadway Road and University Drive from 7 p.m. Friday, March 10 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 11. The same area will then be closed from 7 p.m. Saturday, March 11 to 4 a.m. Monday, March 13.

These times may be subject to adjustment, according to ADOT.

Eastbound I-10 narrowed lanes between Riggs Road and Gila River Bridge

Details: I-10 eastbound (toward Tucson) will be narrowed to one lane overnight between Riggs Road and the Gila River Bridge (south of Chandler) for a pavement improvement project.

When: 9 p.m. Sunday, March 12 to 5 a.m. Monday, March 13.

Additional Restrictions: I-10 westbound (toward Phoenix) will be narrowed to one lane overnight between the Gila River Bridge (near SR 587) and Riggs Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights from March 13 thru March 16.
